Best "modern" console game is Portal.
Depends entirely on your age and computer upbringing.
For me the most fondly remembered are
C64
Uridium
Paradroid
Sanxion
Monty on the Run
Amiga
Zool
New Zealand Story
Shadow of the Beast
Xenon 2
Best modern?
GTA V for me such an amazing story line, great characters and great gameplay.
Due out on PS4 soon so looking forward to replaying it.
Lemmings, obvs
Elite . Quake was really good too .
Civilization
I recently downloaded an emulator and played some of the games of my youth. They were shit by today's standards, even though I loved them at the time.
I stand by XCOM though. The only game where you had no idea what was going to happen or what your aim even was.
In my time(s), chronologically:
Star Raiders (Atari 400)
Gorf
Defender
Downhill Domination (PS2)
Shadow of The Colossus
GTA San Andreas
GTA V
'Destroy him, my robots'
Also loved Karts on the N64. Specifically, Block Fort on battle mode.
Wt actual f
Two pages and no mention of Paper Boy?
Shame on STW.
Goldeneye on the N64 was pretty awesome.
Once had a Defender emulator on a PC, that was good but TT superbike was the only reason I bought a pS2 and it's the only game I play on it.
Thanks for that Drac! Fortunately I am Android 😉
Are you all on crack?
Civilization.
I don't understand how you can all be so wrong...
Thanks for that Drac! Fortunately I am Android
My deepest sympathies.
Monkey Island
Final Fantasy VII
Portal
That's about it really. Oh, and maybe the first Resident Evil, that made me a bit scared, the rest were pap.
Elite
Doom
Oids
Worms Reinforcements (Still Play on Dos Box)
Sensible Soccer
Kick Off 2
Dungeon Master
Links Golf
Need for Speed 2 SE
Virtual Pool

I think resi 2 was my first one, playing it late one night, the birds made me fall right off my chair 😆
Lots of good suggestions above. Loved X-Wing when it first came out on PC. Spent hours/days/weeks on that game. Tie fighter had a good story line as well and also had multi player.
Civ
Elite
Oh, also, SYNDICATE!!!

don't remember mentioned on thread:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z_(video_game)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeSpace_2
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberation:_Captive_2
I appreciate the colour clash of Dizzy on the C64 (128 FTW) and the unbelievable (albeit too complicated for me!) GTA V, but the only game that surpassed all others for pure brilliance of gameplay & current tech, and therefore worthy of the OP....
Press Start? Heelll yeah!
Syndicate and UFO: enemy unknown/tftd.
Both great calls.
I loved syndicate!
Settlers! Another classic.
Doom for me - happy days playing deathmatch at work whilst telling the bosses it was network testing software
Elite.
Honourable mentions for Doom and Wipeout 2097
Exile?
It amazes me that every single post in this thread proves the OP wrong.
Aye, best modern game is GTA V, easily. Superb for both single and multiplayer.
It amazes me that every single post in this thread proves the OP wrong.
Come on, it doesn't really.
why is no one saying
TETRIS
because it's computer game heroin innit ?! everyone knows how to play it, everyone loses, you still go again
The adictive ones that spring to mind
Elite
Dungeon Master
Civilisation
Quake 1,2&3
Some funny ones
Multiplayer Quake 3
Multiplayer Bomberman
Multiplayer Joust
Multiplyer IK+
Multiplayer Speedball 2
Good music
Xenon 2 -
Tetris
Last Ninja 2
Blood Money
Also ive never owned a console and no longer waste time with games, life is a game
@Drac (waaaay back on page 1 of this thread), seeing that section of "Spy vs Spy" took me back to the hours my brother and I spent playing it on the Spectrum. Happy days. 😀
Although I would have to say Target: Renegade is my vote. Anyone else remember that?
Speedball 2
Sensible Soccer
Cannon fodder
Ocarina of time
Galaxian
Mario 64
Asteroids
Space invaders
All have taken up a lot of time
I was a Sensible software fan as I was a Rare fan so things like mega lo mania, diddly kong racing, banjo kazooie etc, etc were all warmly received.
Elite and Lords of Midnight. Huge world, immensely addictive and tiny memory footprint.
I've got Lords of Midnight on my phone now. Still remember where all the lords are, think I can just about remember all the keystrokes 😆
Can't believe no one's mentioned Descent yet!
Great shout on Portal. Really challenged perceptions on what a 1st person 'shooter' could / should be.
Still waiting for GTA V to come out on the PC.
Brian Bloodaxe
Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle. The little multilayer stick man game in Alien Hominid also takes some beating. For modern games, in my opinion it has to be Demons or Dark Souls......praise the sun!
@Drac - you mention QWTF earlier in the thread, it was a small community back in the day, were you in a clan? Not sure if you remember the following clans: SG, EQ, TF, WK 🙂
Aaaaahhhh the memories..
The new elite is gorgeous and mahooooooosive.
The what, now?
Just watched some Elite Dangerous trailers. May have to get that when it comes out.
The actual answer is GTA V. You can't deny it. Stealing cars, modifying cars, ace missions, ace characters, the look and feel, the map is massive, guns (lots of guns), planes, helicopters, boats, subs, bikes, hills, mountain lions - do I need to go on?
Of course for all the misty eyed amongst us, the correct answer is one of:
UFO
Syndicate
Transport Tycoon
Desert Strike
Micro Machines
or possibly just multi player on N64 Goldeneye. Me and my brother were talking about that the other day - we spent hours and hours playing that together, controlling your character at the same time as looking at the other half of the screen to figure out where my brother was.
