Is there such a thing as a can opener that works?

The last two I've bought have been awful, one that wouldn't grip the tin and the other just destroys it. I remember my parents having one when they got married and it lasted about 50 years! Can anyone recommend a can opener? Is it too much to ask for it to open a can?
