On road rides we had a phrase 'He's hard in his car' about bad or aggressive drivers.
The X6 is just another example of this (basically a dick extension for wimps).
I saw a couple of guys in one the other day in Manchester. They didn't look like wimps to me.
Yes but no but you're missing the point : they would be wimps on a bike.
Totally not biking folk.
🙂
Passat CC is a great car.. the mistake they made was calling it Passat CC if they had re-badged it some other luxury VW name then it would have had a place in the line up. its basically aluxury pasat which they don't make.
Regarding the porsche Panamera, how is that pointless? It's about the most practical car Porsche make. Ugly, maybe but I like it a lot.
But why would you want a Porsche that was made for a purpose?
Buying sportscars, supercars, hypercars etc should be about wanton excess, not boring family practicality. Buy a 5 series touring if you want to lug a load or carry feral children to soccer practice.
Think you're hard?
Get up Burrington Coombe in under 7:20 on a bike then.
etc
etc
Fight from your strengths not weaknesses.
Being big does not make you hard : it just means you are heavy.
I saw a couple of guys in one the other day in Manchester. They didn't look like wimps to me
Most drug dealers aren't wimps
The X6 is a fairly pointless car, but when you consider the market they are aiming for (RR Sport, Big Audis, BMW X5) it kind of makes sense - I mean how often do you see a RR Sport or BMW X5 being used to its full potential? round where I live most RR Sports are used to transport kids to School, then their mums onto the beauticians, so if you are only using your huge, powerfull status symbol for these tasks, does it matter if it is a coupe? it isn't going to be running garden waste to the council tip or picking up paving slabs from Wickes anytime soon...
As far as i'm concerned the X6 is an automotive posh handbag, pointless, but if you like it, why not?
Is it really any different to fat middle aged men buying a 4k mountain bike and riding it round Swinley forest once a month?
Even if I lived an idle rich lifestyle I doubt I'd buy an X6, mostly because i'd rather have an Audi RS6... and a Bowler Wildcat for when it snowed...
And I bet they can look after themselves, even if they can't make it up Burrington Combe in seven and a third minutes. Immagonna shout that at them if I see them again though. They'll be so deflated.
Passat CC is a great car.. the mistake they made was calling it Passat CC if they had re-badged it some other luxury VW name then it would have had a place in the line up. its basically aluxury pasat which they don't make.
they do make a luxury passat. its called the phaeton.

I'm sure there must be stuff you're not good at. Just because someone isn't into the same stuff as you doesn't make them a whimp or a cock. Being quick on a bike doesn't mean you're 'hard' it just means you're quick on a bike.
If you've got the money to spend on a lease or to buy the car then who cares (apart from uptight people on here).
I saw a couple of guys in one the other day in Manchester. They didn't look like wimps to me
I disagree with your statement : Most drug dealers are, in fact, wimps.
Now the statement 'Most members of the SAS are not wimps' is a fact. 🙂
Not these two. They'd have had your shaven legs for breakfast.
Not up Burrington Coombe tho 🙂
I think the X6 might just catch you at the top. Only just mind. 🙂
Now you are being ridiculous.
If I was allowed to burn hydro-carbons then I would use my Cr250R motocross bike, or my mates GSXR11....
I don't drive an X6?
Cayenne then.
The SMART coupé.
they do make a [s]luxury passat[/s]really cheap rebadged Bentley. It's called the Phaeton.
FTFY. 🙂
they do make a luxury passat. its called the phaeton.
I thought the phaeton was a whole lot bigger than the passat like a A4 vs A6.
Passat CC is definitely smaller than the phaeton.
I'd have to nominate a 'fully-loaded' sports ute, such as the Holden SS - 2 seats, in a pick-up that can't go offroad on account of massive alloys and no ground clearance. Plus, must have terrifying handling due to less weight over rear wheels, so not sporty either. That said, perfect for revving around town.
The last X6 I saw would struggle worse that my Passat in rubbish/slightly dodgy conditions... Anything with tyres that ridiculously wide on would get bogged on damp grass, let alone snow. Mind you, the same could be said for just about any modern Range Rover.
And to think that they were invented to allow a farmer something smart to go into town with on the weekend after a hard week driving round his farm.
I thought the phaeton was a whole lot bigger than the passat like a A4 vs A6.Passat CC is definitely smaller than the phaeton.
it is, but the CC passat isnt really any more expensive than the regular passat (comparing like-for-like spec). Given the phaeton looks a lot like a passat, you could claim its just a luxury one 🙂
under that criteria i kind of agree then... hmmmm.
Although you can get the 3.6 V6 in the CC, and if we're splitting hairs, Why a scirocco? same as 3 door golf? except 3 door golf is better and the R has 4x4... pointless.
I can see the OP's point to an extent - they aren't particularly roomy inside, not massively quick (unless its an 'M') and they're expensive to run, buy and maintain.
However, having recently gone from a small 2-seater (Cayman) to a Q7, for long commutes its a god send. Its a pleasure to drive on major roads, stick it on cruise, heated seats on and just waft along. My average speed is also much lower because the desire to go 100mph everywhere just doesn't exist. If that X6 is anything like mine, I totally get it.
I've also got a van, and for the 400 mile round trip to Wales and back for a bike trip, I'd take the Q7 every day even though it costs a bit more in fuel obviously
I'd be more than happy to have an X6, in fact I was going to buy an X5 and then the recession hit, so for now I'll have to be happy with my 3 series.
I think the Kia Soul looks very cool. I thought the thread was about pointless cars, how is the Kia Soul pointless?
yeah, but you're a **** KT 😉 Case proven.
If that point is to make people feel ill with the very sight of the ugly thing then yes, it has a point. Otherwise why???
Yeh I know what the real one looks like, but I still like it. But then again I like this.
A Q7 looks like a jelly mould
aye, sorry, it's the windows that I remember - the angles are just wrong. And surely, as long as the car works it can't really be called pointless; at the very worst the x6 could be called impractical (and totally gopping)
an x6 is fairly practical though. not as much as an x5, but more so than any coupe, and a whole load of 4 door cars
I disagree with your statement : Most drug dealers are, in fact, wimps. Now the statement 'Most members of the SAS are not wimps' is a fact.
You must be buying your drugs from the wrong people. The guys I deal with carry machine guns. Mind you, I only buy 100 kilos at a time. Different ball game altogether.
at the very worst the x6 could be called impractical (and totally gopping
Yes ugly, in my opinion, but why is it impractical? Carries x number of people in comfort, I don't think it's purpose is do do more than that.
sorry, when I said 'impractical' I meant in the sense of 'impractical for daylight use because it's blindingly hideous and you'd be ashamed to take it out in public'
- being serious, I have nothing against the X6 apart from its looks, and though I've never driven one I'm sure it's lots of fun overtaking people in a storm-trooper helmet 😀
Yes! More Kia Soul hatred. Thank you.
But no car is pointless if the owner enjoys it, for whatever reason. And that, my friends, is why none of your opinions matter in the end. It's personal choice, and personal choice seems to be driving manufacturers all down the trends of cars that I'd not touch with a bargepole, but it seems lots of people like them.
@aracer no my main transport is an S65, but I also have a RRS for knocking about in, that should raise your hackles a bit 🙂
Seems to me the only pointless thing to have is an opinion. So I'm getting rid of mine.
Our chairman has an s65, very much an old chaps car I would have thought. V12 does sound fantastic but you would expect that for £150k+ of car. Is it silver?
Although he would never go near something as common as a range rover sport, he leaves that for the management trying to outdo each other in the car park.
I drive this, just to really piss everybody off 🙂
@amedias but that's not right - an x6m is quicker round a track than most 911s or Astons
A Cayenne Turbo is quicker round a track than a Lotus Exige but you could still get 5 adults and a couple of dogs in the boot.
If you go by those 4 cars Nurburgring lap times (as thats a pretty good benchmark) then you're wrong on both counts there!
clubber - Memberyeah, but you're a **** KT Case proven.
Can't argue with that.
Does anyone on here actually drive an X6?
I'd never buy one, not necessarily cos I think it's ugly (I could live with the way it looks), but because I don't see the point in owning a car that big which can still only seat 5 people.
There is a lowered x6 which I often see being driven around Bradford. I often wonder about the point of that.

So it is that little bit more hidden from general view?
I'm sorry, but i actually do like the look of most of the aforementioned vehicles (with the exception of the mini and the kia). Great big "soft roaders" like the X6, Q7, Cayenne etc are superb for long journeys with lots of stuff and if you decide to give it the beans every now and then, you can. My wife has a new Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 5.7 hemi and my mother-in-law has a Volvo XC60 and they are both reasonable to drive but very comfortable and over-take like rocket-ships. We travel dirt roads, mud, snow, 1000mi road trips and i very much doubt any of us will own a regular car again...

But cars like A6 Quattros are able to match all the above for the vast majority of the time but with the added benefit of looking like a normal car.
Tell you what then m_f, you drive your A6 and let them drive whatever they want.
It's the pink tigra you nearly bought that I couldn't see the point of. 😛
But cars like A6 Quattros are able to match all the above for the vast majority of the time but with the added benefit of looking like a normal car.
It's not about the looks, it's the comfort of these cars, of which more upright seat position is one thing. I like driving wife's "olympic -edition" sporty VAG but actually prefer my Scenic for most of time due comfort (don't like sitting the road). I'd love to get something else which include all the good things about the Scenic along with quality, power and proper chassis & steering but something like that would cost 2-3 times as much.
Hmmm, as a follow up to this "debate" can I pose another related question to the STW automotive exeperts...
If cost and practicality were of no concern what car would you have then?
My own choice would have to be a caterham seven of some sort..
To my eyes, as a designer in a past life, I find all BMW's truly ugly. Audi's I love, because I like the clean, understated lines, especially the A5, which to me is flawless. A great fast tourer, and the car I would be handing over cash for if the lottery coughed up. I actually like the Kia Soul, as a small, spacy town runabout it works very well. Reminds me very much of the Citrôen Ami 8.
Saw one of those new Mini Coupé's the other day; deary, deary me. What an ugly car.
And I find all new Minis pointless anyway; bigger than the original, but less internal space. Hello? The point of that is?
I do tend to like coupé's though, I loved my Puma, less room for a bike than the Fiesta, but so much damned fun to drive.
wife's "olympic -edition" sporty VAG
😆
I love the Kia Souls would have one in a heartbeat if the missus would let me.
Think BMW have really lost there way design wise,X1,X3,X6 new 5 Series all either dull or plug ugly.
New 3 Series looks alright ,New 1 series pretty dull too.
Dont get me started on the Mini family.
wife has had her new Kia Soul for 2 weeks now and lovin it 😀
Think you're hard?
Get up Burrington Coombe in under 7:20 on a bike then.
And, I bet you're better than them at World of Warcraft. Bloody losers....
my main transport is an S65, but I also have a RRS for knocking about in, that should raise your hackles a bit
I couldn't care less, but it explains why you think being able to afford such cars is such a big deal.
Money no object and no guilt about fuel economy, either this

or this
Both reasonably practical, both awesome.
That looks like a 911 cut n shunted with a Capri..!
Each to their own and all that.
Interesting:
Those who don't actually like driving buy Audis.
Those who need reassurance buy BMWs.
Those who can't drive at all buy Range Rovers.
Those who are into mythology buy Porsches.
Those who wish to despoil the past buy Mercedes.
Me? I've got a Fiat, because I'm an optimist 😀
Panamera's in the flesh look really good IMO, a lot better than most people's cars.
The X6 is essentially a rich boys 'Barry boy' car. Its utterly pointless to the majority of people but for some people it just pushes the right buttons , practicalities disregarded. Like those people that spend £20k upgrading their Corsa's, totally pointless in many ways and they know it, but they don't care, its what they want to do.
pmsl barryboys
2wd Suzuki X90 is the most pointless car ever, this is a fact.
I find many modern cars pointless. Those ones that look as if they have had a skip dropped on them. With low, sharpely downawrd sloping roofs, slitty little windows, tiny rear hatches, and such a discrepancy betwwen the bloated exterior and the lack of, and waste of interior space, together with the rearward visibilty problems so caused by those sort of designs. I wonder about the people who design, and drive those wheeled eyepokes.
and such a discrepancy betwwen the bloated exterior and the lack of, and waste of interior space
Much of that is due to current legislation on crumple zones and stuff like that though...
Though the majority of it is due to bad design.
Though the majority of it is due to bad design.
Personally I don't believe that to be the case.
Or you can take the experience of my brother, an insurance claims adjuster, who needs to carry a great amoutn of equipment around with him. He test drove a Ford and an AUDI equivalent, his gear fitted in the AUDI but not the Ford.
If you go by those 4 cars Nurburgring lap times
I don't judge cars by their performance on a track in a country I don't live in, under manufactured circumstances that I will never encounter.
I like the fact that the above monstrosity is clearly photoshopped into that Alpine scene as there's no way it would have got there in real life 🙂
