Is having a big family selfish?

Big by weight or by numbers?

not if you rent your kids out to your neighbours (on a means tested rate of course)

Dunno.
If you're a mollusc, having a big family could be shelfish.

No its not selfish, as long as you can provide for them all dont expect the state to support them beyond basic child benefits.

Having any family is selfish. The world is full. No more room. Sorry.

I have to agree with samurai on this one. We're at seven billion and counting, but the planet can only realistically support three.

it is no more selfish, than it is unnatural for folk not to have kids.

Yes think about 4 kids - these if they follow your example could become 16 Grandkids - a generation on and you have a potential 64 Great Grandkids.

It's not like you have 8 kids and only 3 survive like the good old days.

Opt out now, as above the world is over full and you are only introducing them to a life of:

wars over food
wars over limited resources
famine
plague

Think about it - you know I'm right!

It's essential if we want someone to pay for our pensions... Many Euro countries are demographic timebombs, with massive numbers of elderly people and few young people. Make that add up!
On the other hand, the planet can't support the current population. Having children is the least green thing you could possibly do, no matter how many muesli boxes you recycle.

Have lots of kids. Educate them all and let them get inspired by the world around them. Nudge them toward Engineering and physical sciences, they will build rockets and technology such that we can colonise other planets.

Maybe if we shoot old people. Or send them up in a big swirling maelstrom when they self detonate.
