3G has grey text on the back, 3GS is silver. (Both have silver Apple logos.)

The 3G will run so slowly it will be useless, the 3GS will be marginally better.

Other way round I thought - the S stands for 'sinks'

As the Google link will show, the text on the bottom of the rear case is shiny silver like the Apple logo on the 3Gs, the 3G is grey print.
