[#1737114]

With the fuss about the new phone coming out i'm genuinely starting to feel like i really must be missing the point. Am i the only person who finds these things appalling?

I'm not a technophobe as such but the iPhone just sums up our reliance on gadgets as entertainment.

The more i hear about them the more i can't stand them....please tell me i'm not the only one!

yadda yadda yadda *some people like them* yadda yadda yadda

yadda yadda yadda *some people hate them* yadda yadda yadda

Like most things in life really, but for an inanimate object to get you worked up enough to be posting about your hatred for it on an internet forum... YOU NEED TO GET OUT MORE! 😕

They're just a bit of technology that's all. Mine replaces a phone 'thing' and a music playing 'thing'. I give it no more thought than that really.

Am i the only person who finds these things appalling?

Can't see what there is about them to go all drama queen, if you don't want a smart phone then don't buy one. I love my HTC Desire, and I do mean 'love'.

Sorry i was out on my bike rather than queuing for an iPhone or checking my Farcebook status.

If you bought yourself a 'proper' mobile device you could do both, and listen to music, and track your route, etc, etc.

nickc...Thats fair enough. I suppose the problem i have is that i can't see the need for one in my life. As a social tool then they clearly make alot of sense in the age we live in but seeing as the only person i text regularly is my wife then a phone that can do a whole lot more is of no use to me. That and i can't justify the contract costs in order to own one.

It has not just to do with 'entertainment', unless you're the sort of sad person who's day is taken up with dumb farm games on Facebook. An iPhone is a PC, a pocket computer, and as such fulfils the same function as the device you're using to post on here. If it fills you with such abhorrence, I'm amazed you can bring yourself to actually use a computer. Mine is used for reading books, like I was doing in Cafe Nero this afternoon, listening to music, tracking rides and walks on OS maps, taking photos and posting them up for friends to see, keeping in touch with friends, checking the weather, keeping up with the news, posting on here, buying books, music, gig tickets...
If all those things fill you with dread, I really suggest you seek help. It's just a really useful device that helps my life run a little smoother, just like any net connected computer does.

Yet you're happy enough posting on an internet forum 4 times in 15 minutes...

Eh?

Me wound up?

Quite the contrary! I'm sat here playing with my new iPhone! 😉

You are/were the one wound up seeing as you felt the need to moan about something so inconsequential on an internet forum, seeking approval from others!

I don't really see the point in them/don't get the hype. But all I see a phone as is for something to text and call people on - I'm going back to my nokia 3410!

I'm not completely anti-apple as I loved my "classic" iPod, but most of their products (especially the iPad) seem a bit pointless to me when you can get the same if not better thing for less money.

Note to self.....STW is no place for your own opinion 🙄

I'm here because i'm unemployed and have developed a very nasty habit of lurking on here when not out on my bike or job hunting, neither of which can be done all day every day.

I have clearly mis-judged things...........

Strange that the STW mind-readers missed that

Smartphones are great, and do many things that bigger devices do.

But would you need one stranded on a desert island? Probably an entertaining diversion but not really a need like food/water/shelter

Man asks question, doesn't get the response he wants, pulls the 'own opinion' line. You asked the question, don't take the hump if you don't like the answer, rollin' right back at ya. 🙄

Me too. And I see a toaster as a thing for making toast. But an iPhone is neither, so what?

Perhaps if they called it the iTinyWeeComputer you would get the point? It's not just a phone!

In fact I use my HTC Hero more for internet / email / music much more than I do for phoning or texting.

Gary_M: Not really got the hump, i wasn't expecting to get grief thats all.

I'm clearly ignorant of what these things do. Are you able to use them as GPS then?

I guess I'm just one of the few who prefers doing those things on the "proper" item. I hate typing on phones (including the touch screen on iphones), I'd rather take the time to start up my pc and type it properly. If I'm not at home then I'll just wait til I am - never had to urgently write an email so these things don't bother me.

Yes, and they're not bad as a GPS either.

I don't really see the point in them/don't get the hype. But all I see a phone as is for something to text and call people on - I'm going back to my nokia 3410!

I was exactly the same until the first iPhone came out. All I wanted a phone to do was phone and text people, cos every other thing that was being added to phones at the time was totally pointless and only slowed the phones down!

The iPhone really added a whole load of useful things into the mix though, whilst making it all nice and easy to use.

No real advantage to them...they are good at what they do but they lack a great deal compared to comparable phones; they have restrictions in place because America can't handle it (video calls via wifi??? WTF??? Allegedly AT&T couldn't handle the data if people tried using their network to do video calls - so you can make calls if you are connected via Wifi).

The Apple Marketing machine gets the fans and those who like the kit to go into hyperdrive and make everyone think they are missing out - they aren't - the phone works but so does the competition...so you aren't missing out by not having one.

But I don't want or need one! Have only recently got a phone with a camera, didn't actually want the camera but you can't get phones without them these days.

My Camelbak was stolen at mayhem last week as i was closing up the stand. Stupidly I put it down. Went around the back of our stand for a few minutes (midnight) came back to find it was gone. In it was company Macbook, ipad, headphones, camera blah blah. About £2k of gear. I reported it and tried to get some sleep but failed. The next morning my son reminded me that the iPhone I have in my pocket can track my iPad. I opened the 'Find my iPhone' app and hey presto up pops a map of the Mayhem arean with a dot representing my iPad. I duly locked it remotely and sent it a message that said the iPad was stolen and it's location was currently being tracked and this location was being relayed on to West Mercier police. 20 minutes later the contents of my bag were dumped at the side of an exhibitors van. I now have everything back apart from the Camelbak and some sunglasses.

THAT'S how good iPhones are 🙂

Now even though I knew they did that, I am still impressed.

I definitely don't worship at the Apple alter, totally scoffed @ my partners iPhone when she got it, an hour later I knew I had to have one. Fantastic tool 1st phone I've ever paid for, don't understand the hater's attitude, if you don't want one don't get one!

BD - as for their fragility, mine gets treated like any other phone I've owned, though it does live in a basic cover. Stuffed in my pocket with all the rest of the crap I own, there pretty sturdy really.

Interested to know how you can track it if it get lost though. Saw it on the blurb for the 3GS but wasn't able to find anything about it afterwards.

Just want a phone for very urgent or emergency calls, why would anyone want anything else?
Had a couple of texts and couldn't make any sense of the strange lingo and recently came across a message someone left for me last year

Great for cases such as if you break down in the car or medical emergency, but my idea of hell being contactable at all hours.

Had a mobile from the early analogue days, got changed to digital and still got the same contract with o2.
For some strange reason they give me 100 quid a year to stay with them and the bill including rental is never more than 9 quid a month.

Sure these are wonderous devices and quite fond of mp3 players and digital cameras, but they don't interfere with my privacy or non-working hours

I was doubtful about them, I played with some friends iPhones and thought yeah they're cool but are they really for me. When my contract ended it was cheaper for me to get an iPhone than I had been paying so went for it.

It's amazing, I use it to surf when not sat at my desktop, I connect to websites blocked at work, it holds info handy for me at work, it has all my shifts until 2012 on it, it holds music and interfaces with the car, it's a cracking GPS, it has a OS mapping software on it at 1:25,000 scale, I can pick up my emails when out and about, I can laugh at Mark being grumpy, it has so many handy apps, I can play Monopoly when chilling at work and apparently it's also a phone.

Then you clearly don't want any kind of clever mobile.

But just because you only use your PC to type out the church newsletter doesn't mean that other people using them to go on the internet, send email, video conference etc etc are wasting their money, misguided or "wrong".
