Sounds great, will give it serious consideration depending on features/price and size (I really like the regular 6/7 size, don't really want plus size). Tend to get 2-3 years out of an iPhone before passing it on so I think they are pretty good value if you use them a lot. Got a 6S right now which is fine so don't need a new one but may be tempted!

iPhones are not fragile. My mates mrs drove over hers with her SMax. Apart from a cracked screen

That's kind of my point, fall from table....cracked screen, fall out of pocket....cracked screen etc etc...my 5S did it, my 6 did it, my SE hasn't done it yet but I've only had it since December so give it time.

Never broken the screen on an Android.
With handsets from HTC they used rubber in the build I assume so it's less slippery and acts as a shock absorber, with Samsung historically using plastic they just used to split apart (battery, back plate etc) and dissipate the shock that way either through design or accident....far more practical.

No doubt like the mug I am I'll replace with a bloody iPhone anyway due to all the content on my laptop, phone and cloud and my continued obscure purchasing tastes that Google doesn't cater for.

Has Sir considered a tempered glass screen protector? Very good for taking the impact, and only a couple of quid for a decent one.

You may have all convinced me try a SE with 128gb for music which I use quite a bit.

I bought an SE with an Otterbox case last month. Brilliant size to use one handed and back camera is half decent as well. Should be fairly well supported by Apple in the years to come as it is a current model. Even been happy watching Netflix on it at a push.

Nothing to say about the iPhone X mind you. I can see people paying £1k for it though as they are so darn useful!!

Or just being a bit less clumsy? 😉

I do think the smaller form-factor phones are a bit more durable though. I dropped my caseless 4S numerous times, including onto concrete. I managed to shatter the back glass once (which I replaced with a nice carbon back) but otherwise it was fine.

Got a silcone bumper on my SE, purely because it came with one and it makes it nice to hold, but I probably won't bother with a screen protector.

The question there is are they 2x as useful as a 500 quid phone?

The only person asking that question are paupers who can only afford android phones. This thread is for the Apple Elite.

That's a pretty telling test.

It's not really (and anyway, it did break). What would be much more impressive would be if they didn't break when dropped from 3 or 4 feet. My 3 daughters have been through a number of iPhones over the last 2 years just because the damn screens are so fragile.
There are numerous drop test videos comparing iPhones to various androids and the iPhone invariably comes out worst.
But then Apply know where to make their money!

Well £500 phones are never 2 x better than £250 ones so I imagine expectations aren't quite that high.

Is a £5000 bike 2x as useful as a £2500 bike?

iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

I'd seen somewhere that Apple's big problem is the sheer number of phones that they sell. So, if they come up with some super amazing new idea they're unable to source the components in the quantities needed. Splitting into iPhone and a premium iPhone was one suggestion for how they could introduce bleeding edge new features while also selling huge numbers.

This thread has started early. I wasn't expecting it until tomorrow evening 😉

As always, I'm excited to see what they announce, but I'm not expecting any big surprises. The rumour-mill seems to be well on top of Apple's plans these days. The biggest surprise will be if they *don't* announce one of the rumoured new features. Tim Cook, tomorrow:

"I bet you thought we were bringing facial recognition to our best ever iPhone. WE'RE NOT! 😛 "

Never broken the screen on an Android.

Conversely, the one top end small form factor Android phone I have used (Sony Z3 Compact) was utter rubbish - the back of it broke in a case, in my pocket.

I must say that the prospect of a glass back does not really appeal...

I'm also trapped in the iTunes - iPhone pit where I only keep getting iPhone's due to iTunes. I just picked up the iPhone 7 as phone companies nearly give em away before the new one comes out, but I think this might be my last due to the removal of the headphone jack.

Was in my car yesterday morning, Russell Brand comes on, cant stand him and drivel on the other stations, went to plug in my aux cable... had to resort to bluetooth and the sound quality was awful. The sound issue is probably my car stereo, but why should I update that because of a phone!?! The new headphones that came with the phone are straight to lightening which means they are useless with any other device and you get one adapter which I think I will need to have surgically attached to me!

I also dont get this trend for larger screens (its porn right?) I moved from a 5 to a 6 and didn't like the size or shape, was jealous when the SE came out, I did want one when upgrading but they no longer stock them in large memory sizes.

Rant over

You do know iTunes is available for Android, right?

I have an SE and a 6S plus - which I rate mainly as the camera seems a fair bit better, and you get used to the extra screen space if not the reduction in pocket space. Not yet seen a reason to move up though with the new releases, although fully waterproof would be tempting as an investment protection. Wait another year at least I think.

On storage - I moved down from 128Gb on 6 to 64 on 6s plus on the promise of iCloud photo. It's a pain - you now have a blob of cached photos that you can't shrink (hopefully someone reads this and proves me wrong) - at least with the old camera roll you could 'burp' it every so often and only sync the photos you wanted access too.

Interesting comments from oikeith which got me thinking. Apple has always had a "walled garden" approach to doing things. When I first climbed into Apple's ecosystem - despite some initial learning pains - I found it absolutely brilliant. It "just worked" and the hardware was fab too.

Apple's problem is that what people want and expect from their tech has moved on and Apple have not kept up. I find myself looking on enviably at the tech available outside Apple's ecosystem. The HomePod will go some way to fill that big gap, but it's an expensive solution to only part of the problem. I get closer every day to defecting to Spotify from Apple Music and buying myself an Echo.

I will be buying one fairly soon. I'll probably wait out the release day rush and pick one up in a month or two's time.

I get 20% off at Vodaphone through work, which helps.

The "zeenews" one does look nice, but seems to utilise the past generation connector.

They (rather bizarrely) ditched the 64GB model SE and instead now only offer 32GB or 128GB. Clearly they have never read Goldilocks.

But there are still lots of 64GB available on eBay, which is what I went for (£195 used but excellent condition with box, headphones and charger). And there will probably be even more after the 8/X hits the shops.

I get closer every day to defecting to Spotify from Apple Music and buying myself an Echo.

Apparently I get six months Apple Music for free with EE - but I've never bothered using it. I generally just listen to Spotify (Free), Prime Music, or various internet radio, all on the Echo.

How will you lay in bed watching Netflix with your fave pair of Sennhieser headphones and charge these new phones? (or an iphone7).

Adapters are freely available that allow you to do this if you so choose.
Or just stick on the Bluetooth ones with 7+hrs battery life.....

Never broken the screen on an Android.

Friend of mine dropped her new s****y Samsung. Screen replacement was £350 for the component plus fitting and she had to wait quite a few weeks for one to be ordered and delivered.

That doesn't work for me, I would need to carry an adapter everywhere meaning I would at some point not have one and be unable to use the device.

Bluetooth headphones are another £100 on top of the device and TBH I like using the various very expensive headphones I already own and the wire is actually quite handing for keeping them together, on me and easy to find.

Unfortunately Samsung have followed Apple down the path of building their phones from glass and metal, all of these devices are now too fragile for robust use and have to be handled with care....apparently that's 'build quality'....

...and no you can't get iTunes for Android, you can subscribe to Apple music for a fixed monthly fee but that's not the iTunes you get on laptops and iPhones where there is no subscription and you buy individual tracks at 79p - 99p each.

Shame as that is the only thing keeping me with Apple.

Presumably then, you would also at some point forget your headphones, or the charger, or the phone itself. With similar results.

Personally I leave my adapter attached to my headphones, and then I don't forget it.
But I'm fairly organised.

I know the whole (lack of) headphone-jack thing has been done to death, but it continues to surprise me that some people can't accept that it is a problem for many others. #FirstWorldProblem, granted, but the point is it's an introduced inconvenience that wasn't there before. They can be the most irritating of all.

Be interesting if a similar thing happens tomorrow if/when they remove Touch ID on the new phones.

I'm interested in hearing about the facial recognition element of the new phone. Certainly I can see it being a bit annoying:

A) Being pissed and slobbering when you need to FB mates whilst dribbling down your best white ironed shirt
B) Growing a beard, stubble or shaving one off
C) Wearing glasses or contacts or both or neither
D) Annoying Siri to the point she refuses You access to your phone 😆

I still can't believe people are still trying to justify a £900 (or whatever) smartphone like it's a necessary thing and has features so amazing that it would be impossible for them to navigate their way through life without them, especially if they definitely didn't need those features last round, because when the other tribes phones had them, they were pointless.

Shit, if want the new shiny thing, at least be brave enough to say it - trying to justify is as a sensible level-headed purchase is verging on the pathetic.

And FFS stop comparing them to bikes too - bikes are brilliant things that make life better. Smartphones are either tools to make you work more or to distract you from the mundane for a few moments.

Keep the phone you've got, stop living life through a 5, 5.5 or 6" screen (pick one, be a dick about it) and spend the money on a holiday, go and see something worth remembering, not something worth filming to try to impress your equally media overloaded FB friends.

I mean, I'm sure Apple, a company with almost unlimited resources and some of the smartest minds on the planet, have thought about what happens if someone shaves their beard. 😆

Just copy whatever samsung did 5 years ago or whenever the S3 came out with it's facial unlock, Nexus 5 had it too I seem to recall.

Did they ditch the headphone jack just to make it more waterproof? Do the other waterproof phones have no jack?

Anyway, I might upgrade to one of the other ones being released (the iphone 8 or 7s or whatever they'll call it) if it's going to survive in my pocket on a wet bike ride. Also because buying expensive consumer electronics is the only way I can feel any joy.

Weren't they widely slated as complete failures that could be fooled by simply holding up a photograph of a person, but conversely failed to recognise the actual face?

Rumour mill suggests the Apple one will be infra-red based and used some form of 3D depth analysis that it'll get from the AR hardware.

Did they ditch the headphone jack just to make it more waterproof?

No, they ditched it to further tie people to the Apple ecosystem, while telling them it was required to make it waterproof.

I have a bright yellow 1980s waterproof walkman somewhere that has a headphone jack on it.

Rats. Now I have even less rational basis for upgrading. Maybe I'll have to find happiness in something like human relationships or personal growth instead.

I'm sure they have. And based on my experience of apple OSs over the last year or two, it probably involves opening iFace, finding the settings menu, invoking BeardTime, navigating to Advanced Settings, switching off Stubble, entering your AppleID password, and it can't be done if you're not online and logged in to iCloud (only £5 a month)

(I'm still grumpy because I tried to email some pics out of Photos last night)
