It was fine when I put it in the bag. It is now turned off and pressing the buttons won't turn it on

plug it in, leave it for a bit and then try starting it.

battery or thermal cut off?
Plug it in to let it charge.
Also try holding the home and lock buttons together for a few seconds (maybe 20 - can't remember) and it'll reboot; hopefully.

This worked. the ipad was 80% charged when I put it in the bag so I was fairly sure it wasn't a flat battery
