If they make an add-on to read SD cards, then they obvioulsy approve. So why isn't it included in the device? Seems odd to me. Carrying around extra dongles is a bit of a faff, especially if the device is marketed as being super functional and swish with clean elegant lines etc.
what molgrips said.
1 SD slot, and 1 microUSB with mobile HD link and no other external connectors ought to solve all the necessary connectivity issues. Then you can do all that photo/video stuff with NO adapters. And have 1 single cable that can plug your iPad into any modern telly in hotel room, hotel lobby/bar, beamer in conference room. Instant corporate use there!
edit: assuming mini displayport to hdmi is an adapter too, and not built in?
I can wait till the iPad 4 ๐

I think the logic is that the add-on is a "Camera Connector" and is sold as such, whereas a built-in one would soon have people asking "Why can't I use the SD card for apps and music like I can on Android?" which is a fair question but something that Apple don't want to support.

Is it really that much harder to carry 1 single cable with a little adapter on the end of it?
I'm not apologising for Apple by the way. I too would like a bit more connectivity, but I can understand why they don't offer it.

Good luck with that.
I would say that Apple do not build slots into he device for 4 reasons:
1) less to go wrong and preserves the Apple sleek image
2) Saves money (for end users and them)
3) Apple love their closed loop when it comes to iOS - adding slots would give people a way into the hardware
4) Apple can make extra money from the dongles.
If you had Apple have the best selling tablet by a big margin - they have no need to add extras as standard.
If you're carrying a HDMI cable to connect a tablet to a TV what's the hardship in having a little dongle on the end of it?
(Edit: beaten to it) ๐

But, that argument falls down when you look at the Macbook range....
Purely down to their market positioning of the tablet
Does it not have micro HDMI either?

Macbook is a "real" computer though.
Apples aim with tablets is to move further towards utility devices that people can use without any computer knowledge.
That's pretty much always been their design aim to be fair, it's just taking them a long time to get there.

But the macbook doesn't use iOS which is what Apple are trying to protect.
One of the reasons why the iPad has done so well is because iOS is intuitive and is incredibly reliable. This is why the Windows effort will fail. I'm on the fence about Andriod - I wish it was also a closed system.

Not on the 2, don't know about the 3 but I doubt it.
Just to say I've found the iPad and Apple wireless keyboard is great netbook replacement. There's less compromise in screen and keyboard size. Use both at a desk for productivity, but on the train I just revert to using on-screen keyboard. And the keyboard pairs up to the iPhone* too, which I admit I've only used a handful of times but has been handy.
The increased screen resolution on the new iPad is going to make RDP into remote servers so much more usable too. iPad with iTap is the only non-Windows RDP client I can find for some servers as I can't find an RDP 7.1 client for my OS X or Ubuntu 'pooters ๐

There is talk that the entire Apple range (inc desktops and laptops) will one day be running versions of iOS.
