Hi,
I need to find a way of documenting various processes and sharing files with a distributed group of colleagues. Some form of intranet software would seem the obvious answer. I use Google Sites for tracking some personal stuff but I think an on-premise solution would be needed.
Ideally what I need is a wsiwyg editor that allows users to simply create pages and links etc.
My company does have Microsoft Sharepoint but that seems very clunky and clumsy for what I want. Is it easy to develop a web front end using Sharepoint and, if so, can someone point me at some resources that cover it.
If anyone can recommend an alternative to Sharepoint please do.
We had some success setting up an internal Wiki and using that as an intranet. Every page can be edited by anyone so it acts as a good knowledge base and you can section it off into categories (Finance, IT, Personel etc).
I'm sure there are others out there but we used Twiki.
we use Trac; we use it for the wiki and the ticketing system. It is very good, and integrates well with our subversion code repository too.
might be overkill for you, but it is open source, so just choose the bits you want (wiki hosted on apache?)

For a "proper" intranet, which can be browser based, or network based, with all the bells and whistles you want/need with security par excellence....Lotus Notes.
..and before y'all poopoo Lotus Notes as some kind of email client...it's not, email is only a fraction of whatit can do.

EDIT - If you want "free" look elsewhere.
We use notes for email and it's one of the worst email products I have ever used if that helps
@surfer - I said...before y'all poopoo Lotus Notes as some kind of email client...it's not, email is only a fraction of what it can do.
email isn't even a fraction of what it can do.
Plus, it's only crap as an email client for those weaned on MS. It's actually superior, and can do so many things that MS can only dream of.

EDIT - dunno why I'm bothering. I don't do this sh!t no more.
email is only a fraction of what it can do.
Or doesnt, as the case may be.
