[#574810]

Hiya, the inlaws are having a bit of bother connecting to the internet.

They can boot the laptop, it connects to the netgear dg834g router, but they get a no internet connection message in explorer. I tried my laptop and iphone, and neither of those connect either. If I turn the router off and on again, it will work, however, the next time they go to use it, usually the same thing happens.

Idiot type diagnosis/explanations only please

Shit router. Had one of those for 2 years and it was hell from minute one. Constantly dropped signal, wireless range is abysmal etc. Not much help there I'm sorry ๐Ÿ™

there should be a light on it that shows whether there is an active ADSL connection, if this is off then check that the phone line is connected properly and that all other equipment has a filter attached.

I have the same, or similar router and it's fine. All lights that should be on, are. Wonder if it could be a tiscalli fault, or whether it is infact a gash router.

try updating the firmware on the router. The Netgear website will guide you through it. I remember a similar problem somewhere in the annals of my past.

I've had the router with nowt problemo.

Check settings? have more than one WAP key?

Also download the latest bios for the router-but you will lose all current settings.

Lend them your pc with all the porn on the desktop?

Firmware update is a good idea. Also, do they have a spare filter - could just be a dodgy filter. Also, is the connection more reliable if they use the wire, rather than wireless?

Same router, same problem. I pissed around with firmware etc., but in the end, just binned it and replaced with a cheap Ozenda one. Its odd, because I used to rate Netgear network switches and hubs etc as good solid pieces of kit.

When it stops working do they still get an IP address from the router?
(menu->start->run->type cmd->type ipconfig in the command window.)

if you logon to the router when it's 'broke', does it have a public IP address?

i.e., are these numbers set on the front page?

ADSL Port
MAC Address 00:0f:b5:ce:af:a1
IP Address 81.178.66.21
Network Type PPPoA
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255
Gateway IP Address 212.74.102.15
Domain Name Server 212.139.132.4
212.74.114.193

Does it say it's connected to their ISP? Can you ping websites? That router provides a couple of troubleshooting tools that will help you determine where the problem lies.

Disconnect the phone from the socket, try again.
Do you have a spare splitter? (The little box that you plug the phone and router into), they can bloe and cause problems.

Is anyone else connected to the router? You can check to see if anyone is connected and it will provide a list.

Cheers.

It'll be next weekend when I'm back over, but I'll try that.
