I'm on sky broadband via a BT line and every time the phone rings when I'm conected the connection drops out and the router help page comes up asking fora username and password.
Is this the ADSL filter dying/dead (the filter is about three years old now) or is it something more complicated?
any ideas....

Try a new filter ?
I have a few clients with sky BB, they are not impressed at all, although not as bad as talktalk! 😉

I'll pick upa new filter and see what effect that has. Generally the broadband is good. Never crashes or down for maintenance, although it can be a little slow at times.
Just this annoying problem with the phone.

Yup usually mean filter is dying.
