Whats the card you have to obtain in on advance for insurance and treatment in europe? Has an id number on it.

Do you mean an EHIC card?
It's a handy thing to have with you on a skiing holiday but it's no substitute for insurance.

It "[i]allows you to access state-provided healthcare in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland at a reduced cost or sometimes free of charge.[/i]"

It doesn't cover costs of getting an injured person off the mountain or private clinics etc.
