Are any of them worth getting to dip one's toe in and learn the basics? With an eye on scaling up, eventually.

Hmmm, interesting.
The reason I ask is we had a demo, at work the other day, of the results you can get with one and they are excellent for carrying out aerial site surveys. Of course, you're not going to do that with the cheapo, indoor ones (or "toys"), but they may be a starting point.
