although if we can find a way of palming Stoke off on the Welsh…

Well, you've all had plenty of practise at palming yourselves off, so yeah, I'm sure if you all got together you'd be able to palm off a city - or at least its population...

Probably the only way for him to save the Union is to introduce some form of regional government

which is going to be potentially embarrassing, didn’t Cummings cut his teeth on ensuring a “no” vote in precisely this sort of regional government in 2004

"Farage Garage" is excellent. I remember the glory days of lorries thronging the A20 (the M20 stopped at Harrietsham), queuing into Dover and Folkestone, lots of customs jobs at the port, booze cruises to Boulogne. Bringing back all that was best of the 1970s. I hope Farah trousers and flared jeans will be compulsory dress - or as it's now in France possibly berets and strings of onions?

The North deserves it's independence. By which I mean Chatham, Rochester and Strood.

Never mind the flag - where's the capital? I could see this one decision splitting into factions Manctopia, the Yorkshire Nation, Lancashire and the Northern alliance for the rest.

Now technically part of France, soon to be renamed ‘Farage Garage’, which must be pronounced like you’re a cast member of Allo Allo

I've just snorted with laughter in a really dull Teams session. Now on mute 🤦‍♂️

Alston.

It is a bit like Canberra. But not as warm.

Alston

New Hartside Cafe and parliament building. When the politics get boring they could just look out the window. Probably face a strong challenge from Dunford Bridge and Flash.

I can imagine it all getting a bit fighty if we go off the ancient kingdoms, given Edinburgh would be in Northumbria 😉

I read somewhere recently* that one way for Boris to come out of the CoVid/Brexit catastrophe smelling like roses would be to iron his clothes, learn to speak in coherent sentences and get a ****ing haircut

FTFY.

Surely York would be the capital of Middleland as it has form for this?

Wasn't the whole (tin foil hat) point of the EU election regions to begin the process of ascending to a sovereign europe, with each region ruled directly from Brussels, eliminating the need for national governments all together?

So this is basically the worst possible extrapolation of EU taking over, but without any of the benefits (trade, free movement, cooperative working etc etc etc) of actually being in the EU?

York which used to be England's capital but then they later came second in a scrap with Lancaster.

Why not?
Assuming we get tight links with Scotland and rejoin the EU.

Poly

Did the yellow and red stripy bit not vote to leave the EU?

I know where the crosses went but despite what the option they crossed said I do wonder if they really voted to leave the or "stick it to the man"

Besides.. we left now so they got what cross in the box said.
Once the economic reality hits and they see their new freedoms what they "voted for" may well change.

Maybe - Dent - it's kind of central. We could also adopt Cumbric as the new old national language of the North.

York which used to be England’s capital but then they later came second in a scrap with Lancaster.

I seem to recall this all gets rather murky, with the Yorkists actually being mainly from Lancashire*, the house of Lancaster mostly being from (when not being foreign) and drawing support from Yorkshire*, the Yorkists defeating the lancasters and wiping out the male line then a distant lancastrian (tudor) cousin invades from France, kills York, marries his sister and puts an end to the whole thing.

*obviously this isn't actually true, but in a very familiar twist they were all friends of the government of the day, parachuted into profitable and trouble free fiefdoms outside of London who had no idea where their particular barony was. So they sided with whomever they expected to win/pay better/treat them worst if they picked wrong, regardless of the reality of their little bit of the world being only 100 yards from York or Lancaster. They occasionally headed north to campaign and fight the opposition a bit to make sure they were on the list for the good jobs but in blatant disregard for the benefit or otherwise of their subjects.

It’s a great battle of East Vs West, Gregs* and Cooplands in one corner, Sayers and £1 bakery in the other.

FFS TINAS you’ve missed the joker - Booths in the west. NO CONTEST

And Northumberland is just Scotland lite.

I think it can lay claim to greater capital city glory than that.

The Emperor Severus ruled the Roman empire for 2 years from there.

Looks like support is growing.

https://yorkshirebylines.co.uk/the-end-of-the-uk-how-broken-promises-are-fuelling-a-new-nationalism-in-the-north/

I'm following this with interest because an independent buffer state between an independent Scotland and England would be a good thing IMO.

@frankconway - how very dare you!

A long time ago I was in a pub in Belford and some very, drunk and bored local lads were trying to provoke trouble with me and my mates and we ignored them. About 15 mins later the big alpha male of the pack came back across and called us all sorts and smashed a bottle on the table but what really riled me was being called a southern poof because I just laughed at them and wouldn't fight them.
Being originally from Manchester and a very proud Northerner, I was enraged by being called a S****erner .... it's a question of context.

As a Scot living in Northumberland for 13 years - I can confirm that Northumberland is basically South-South Scotland.

Has a lot more in common with the Scots than it does with the South.

When IndyRef1 was big news, a good number of mates here did say "Can you take us with you when you go?"

Indeed it is. Equality of (some) funding going forwards is not equity after decades of under-investment.

If the government is serious about the Rest of the Country - South East divide then they have to cut funding in SE and London and up the budgets in the North. For a few decades.

The government pointed to the tens of billions in support given to wages and businesses during the Covid crisis.

This reveals quite a lot. It was the same for everyone in Lockdown v1. When Tier 3 was being imposed they didn't want to know hence the Burnham led furore

As far as I’m concerned most of the midlands should be with the north.
If the is the case then the capital should be at Eyam, as in the past it proved itself to be the least selfish place in the country.

I thought the boundary line was just South of Watford?
