Ghandi definitely deserves a round of applause for
What do I think of Western civilization? I think it would be a very good idea.
Why?
This from the man who thought India could survive in the modern world by everybody sitting around in ashrams spinning cotton... Yeah, right.
because it's a poignant and funny statement Woppit.. nothing more nothing less.. it would have got a round of applause even if you had said it..
What do I think of Western Civilisation? I think it's under threat from fanatical fukwits.
Mr woppit, just 'cos you believe all that guff about your speaker cables doesn't make you fanatical...
*smile* @ nickc
I think fanatics (whether muslim, Christian, Jewish or Tea Party) are indeed the biggest threat to all civilization.
What do I think of Western Civilisation? I think it's under threat from fanatical fukwits.
see..?
Not poignant.. not witty.. not even true..
a point to Mr Ghandi I feel..
You feel what you like. Ghandi's comment is ridiculous and not the slightest bit "witty".
It's the sort of thing usually beloved by those who think that Che Guevara was some kind of altruistic humanist.
I ****ing love Dessi Tutu to bits......even though he's stark raving bonkers, and a minister in heretic cult founded by a serial wife murderer. There are few people I have so much respect for. In the dark days of Apartheid he was often the lone voice who always spoke out against the brutal regime.
I agree with Woppit concerning Ghandi - hugely overrated imo. Che Guevara on the other hand, was described by Jean Paul Sartre as "not only an intellectual, but also the most complete human being of our age". Probably bit of an exaggeration I reckon, but El Comandante is certainly up there with the greats.
Yeah, slaughtering anybody who disagreed with him, or sending them to labour camps. Persecuting gay people and the like. Worshipping Stalin. What a guy.
I met Desmond Tutu and Assser Arafat in Bethlehem, Christmas Eve 1989 or 90. Very surreal. He seemed genuinely a lovely happy chap, and Arafat was a tosser.
I think apathy is a far bigger threat to Western civilisation than fundamentalism. When China and India rule the world, it won't be because some idiots bombed a Tube train, it'll be because complacency amongst the West will let them. And they probably deserve it.
When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said "Let us pray." We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land.
Desmond Tutu

aaah well.. I bow to your very obviously superior judgement.. I personally thought it was very "witty".. I stand corrected..
(I thought incorrect use of speech marks was the territory of the Ghandi and Guevera student brigade.. not of the irrationally grumpy and deliberately obtuse ageing hysteric)
Anyway.. I dunno why you're getting your nickers in a twist with me.. these lot are more up my street than any mercenary or religious types..

You've been looking at those American right-wing neo-conservative websites haven't you Woppit ? Yeah I've seen what they say about El Comandante - it's not very nice.......I don't think they were very pleased with his involvement in the overthrow of the US backed fascist/mafia dictatorship of Batista.
Still, the US right-wing conservatives have never been very pleased with people who stood in the way of their beloved brutal and bloody military dictatorships in Latin America, and the Death Squads which they trained.
Interesting that you should mention gay rights. I know gay rights is a subject which is very close to your heart Woppit - you mention it a lot on here, so I'm surprised that you are not aware that the Cuba which Che helped to build, is leading the way on gay and transsexual rights in Latin America. For example, sex change operations are now available for free under the Cuban health service.

The champion of gay rights in Cuba in Fidel's niece Mariela Castro.
Castro champions gay rights in Cuba
Sure Cuba, like all other Latin American countries, has a long history of anti-homosexual laws and attitudes. And it still has some way to go. But you are kidding yourself (or more probably lying) if you want to suggest that the counter-revolutionaries were gay friendly. You wouldn't have wanted to be gay in Pinochet's US backed Chile, or Batista's US backed Cuba.
Left-wing governments and politicians of Latin America, many inspired by Che, are spearheading LGBT rights. Any resistance, as in Cuba, is coming from the entrenched attitudes of the population. However, there are now nine Latin America countries which allow same sex marriages, in contrast with a mere five US states. And in stark contrast with how things were when the continent was under total US domination.
Of course this has only been possible because Latin America has finally freed itself of US hegemony (well the worst aspects of it at least) Che was/is an inspiration and an icon in that struggle.
FFS ernie dont try and convert him with facts. He has his beliefs they cannot be challenged by rational discourse - no wink I think that is actually, sadly true
Ghandi's comment is ridiculous and not the slightest bit "witty".

It is both witty and insightful. Not sure why you dont get it TBH.
Hard of thinking?
I think the Prophet Muhammad is underated. And Sun Myung Moon.
does anyone else think mr paisley is ok??
does anyone else think mr paisley is ok??
FFS ton, even by your recently deteriorating standards, this is poor trolling. Tell you what though, I can see why you would admire a thug like Paisley.
Don't be ridiculous Ton
The man is an awful bigot responsible for stirring up and continuing ( with others) the troubles in Northern Ireland
foul man with blood on his hands
dd, explain why he is a thug.
dd, explain why he is a thug.
Oh **** off will ya ton ๐
Pailsey is a prime khunt - the worst kind of leader, making none too thinly veiled threats, keen to shit stir and follow behind his dim witted but deadly little activists.
Pretty obvious troll ton as I doubt that even you can't be thick enough to admire such a vile creature ๐
dd, seriously...........why is he a thug.
but you like to call people such, with nothing to back up your claim.
idave, is he worse than any of the other so called religious leaders mentioned above?
that can be your challenge for the week, Ton. you could challenge yourself to see if you can think of any reasons why someone might call him a thug.
You could start with google
