This is the day that M&S no longer selling Cauliflower Steaks made it to the headlines!Who knows, slow news day at the BBC, it's not like there's other important things going on.
The sentence is that big because it includes an element of fraud. When you sign the document saying you are making a true and honest statement (or similar) it has to come with serious consequences for breaching it. In this case he also seems to have forged some documents to enable it to happen. There can be various reasons for sentencing but clearly here the main one is to discourage others from following in his footsteps.

I understand that but the prisons are overflowing as it is and I think space would be better reserved for more violent prisoners etc. Surely the punishment can be something community based which would be a benefit to society instead costing £5k a month in prison. It isn't as if he is going to need rehabilitation - I mean who would make that mistake twice!!
Presumably he was sent to prison so he could find out what it's like to be someone's 'wife' 😯 😆

Don't forget, 2 wives, 2 mothers in law.
Go for sisters to eliminate this issue.
The thought of having to think of 2 Birthday and 2 Christmas presents makes this a no no!! Jail is a crazy waste of already stretched resources, he should be left to live with the 2 lots of grief he will no doubt get!!
How many women have gone down for bigamy
Zero? Not sure of the legal status, but when a woman has >1 husband it's called polyandry.
In England at least, S.57 of the Offences Against The Person Act 1863 applies the offence of bigamy to men and women without distinction. i.e. both polygyny and polyandry are bigamy in English law.
I don't doubt there will be differences in sentencing - there are for most crimes, especially non-violent ones. This has a fair bit to do with care of children.
Bigamy?
No, she was quite slender, as was his other wife - Louise.

Why discriminate between physical violence and other kinds of abuse - especially towards women. Aside from any abuses of the legal system he's conned, manipulated and coerced both wives. You're not thinking too hard about the consequences of doing that to two women (perhaps two families) if you're not seeing the seriousness of that.
Its not just a bit cheeky.
A swift conversion to Mormonism should have cleared the whole sorry mess up.
Just reread the actual story (sometimes it pays to actually read stuff - who knew!). He wasn't actually living as man and wife with both. He had seperated from the first a few years before but had told the 2nd he had got the paperwork through.
A bit (a lot) of a muppet and you have to wonder what was going on in his head but not quite the same as having a wife and two kids living 3 streets apart and hotfoooting between the two twice a night.
So basically he remarried without getting a divorce from his effectively (ex) wife?
Big deal.
Why anyone would want to marry is beyond me.

I think.. the actual story here was that he was stoooopid enough to go on (a shit) telly (programme) whilst bigaming. That's what makes it a "deal". Big, small, whatever, but funny all the same. 😆
Also this

means the actual bigamy is not really a laughing matter. It's a seriously vile thing to do.

So every woman that cheats should go to prison, if getting aeay with cheating by lying counts as abuse?

Why a man would ever want to marry a woman is a mystery, as far as I am concerned. But why he should marry 2 women. That's a bigger mystery!
Bigamy laws also apply to same sex marriages so not get out of jail card for you there.
Gundry initially said he had only had a blessing in the Seychelles with Ms Brooker but the court heard he had married her by forging documents. The court was also told he deceived both women over money.
Hmmm, forgery and deception.

Indeed - he's been convicted here of breaking the law regarding the legalities of marriage. I'm still not quite sure I understand what the first wife is so upset about given they'd been separated for years. The thing is, if like many people these days he hadn't married the first woman there wouldn't be any offence committed and I doubt anybody would be the least bit bothered about the emotional impact on a woman he hadn't lived with for several years.
It's made all the more confusing to me as a verbal contract to cohabit can leave you in a similar situation legally as being married - and can actually be used for the granting of a spousal visa.
Surely cheating is breakibg a verbal contract?
Forgery of course, should be illegal - it shouldn't be 6 months in the slammer in this case though.
Two wives?. Not content with having his every failing and deficiency repeatedly pointed out to him he went for a second opinion? Madness.

Just to go a bit OT here - can it? My understanding is that the widely held idea of "common law marriage" doesn't have much legal significance (I have to admit a personal interest here - I'm one of those people who didn't ever formally get married and feeling quite relieved by that now).

As long as it's in his own home, with another big Amy.
Reminds me of the old joke...if I wanted to disappoint 2 people at the same time, I'd go out to dinner with my parents!
I'm not entirely sure Aracer, but cohabitation can certainly be used in a spousal visa application. It requires a lot more evidence but it is doable.
