Both my parents have been parish/town councillors. Both gave it up when pompous assholes started to get involved. I keep thinking its something I'd like to do but I fear I'd lose my patience/temper very quickly. Which might be what they actually need.

Gammon is so much more than a term for a white middle aged man.
It’s a term for angry little men. Men who are conservative with a big and small c. It’s a term for people who like to use the term ‘I’m not racist but’. It’s a term for the narcissist and the nimby. The small minded, the mean, the culturally immature. It’s a term for those who wistfully look back to the good old days of the 80s and 90s with its section 28 and women had proper jobs on telly like game show hostess Miss World contestant.
I am white, male, middle aged and middle class and feel no reflected insult when a gammon is called a gammon.
Amen (although I'd say that gammon is equally applicable to women with the same mindset and attitude).

Now if they faced centuries of abuse they may actually start to get a tiny understanding of the hatred others have faced (typically caused gammons) throughout present times

Gammom is a state of mind... not derived by social economic or ethnic grouping.

I had the misfortune of being a Parish Councillor around 10 years ago. They was no election as there were not enough people to fill the available places.
Mostly a group of 60yo+ women, probably 5 men, the rest older women. 2 other decent 'normal' people joined at the same time as me. We had all resigned with a year.
You could not find a more insular, backstabbing, lying bunch of people. They obviously met up in the week and got their stories right for the meetings, so they would all say the same thing. They accused a local reporter of swearing during a meeting, she didnt, I was right next to her. At the meeting, one person said they had heard her swear, the following week 4 others had heard it too, even though they were further away. They just lied to suit their agenda.
They didnt like the Clerk, couldnt sack her, so they paid her off, £14k. It was hidden in the accounts, they had a closed meeting to approve it, so it couldnt be reported.
The final straw was the plan to buy the local Police station. One of the oldest women had done a 'business plan' for the building. Myself and another decent one were both in the building trade. She said we could refurb it for £30k. We laughed, and said it'd be £150k+. They woudlnt listen, and went ahead and bought it. Then they couldnt afford to refurb it, so had to get a Government loan to pay for it. So our Parish now has 35 years of debt to pay. Thats when we left, as we didnt want to be associated with such incompetence and lies.

Reminds me of the 7 or so years I did as Local Authority Safer Neighbourhoods Manager. I used to manage the network of local NAG (Neighbourhood Action Group - yes really!) meetings bringing together police, council, city councillors, county councillors, and some legendary parish councillors.
This vid has bought back memories of one particular NAG meeting where a local councillor wasn't getting his way with his request for part of his ward to have use of the local neighbourhood police team's SID (Speed Indication Device) to deal with speedy rat running. We had a few local secondary school students in to observe local democracy & decision making in action at that meeting. Well, cue this councillor not getting his way on the SID deployment, losing his sh*t and right in front of the police inspector chairing the meeting picking up his chair and WWE style throwing it across the room and storming out. I felt most for the secondary school pupils just there to observe - welcome to democracy! 😀

If it were a racist term, could someone call me a gammon? I'm white after all, this is the criterion right? But it's not a term that's ever been levelled at me and indeed is one that I can say with a confident degree of certainty that will never be thrown at me. Why's that, do we think?

Late to this thread, but both it and the meeting are gold. I can't wait for it to get closed down so we can start another to discuss it, kind of like thread fractals spiralling ever onwards.

Can't a person of colour be a snowflake? I've never associated the personality trait with a skin colour.
I had to sit in on a "parish" council meeting. First point of order was a lady getting the minutes changed as the fire brigade were not called at 9:34 but 9:36.
It went downhill from there.
