I'm a massive fan of Tool, and I agree 100% but I've played out Tool so, so very much.

Hmmm liking that Elder link, thanks, and a obscure doom/stoner/sludge thread... oh go on then.

I also highly recommend a bunch Called 'Your Highness' from Antwerp, I would embed a video but their titles and album covers tend to contain things that would attract the ban hammer.

Seriously though, get your headphones on and crank up 'Low Country Exiles' ferocious crushing grooviness abounds.

I thought they were being sued to death, or something?

This is a cool thread! I'm liking fiction or truth? By Castles at the moment. That Elder album is great, they remind me of Baroness a bit...which is a very good thing:)

Good stuff. I liked Elder. I've just managed to get my old record deck working today after many years of it stored away. I would have liked to have had that album on vinyl but it's only available in the US. Got the download instead. Thanks.

Liking these thanks. Though not sure about the description - there are a lot of early Black Sabbath influences here and they were just heavy metal (although they described themselves as a "heavy underground band"!)

Ozzy, Geezer, Tony and Bill have a lot to answer for! Great thread, no Opeth? Electric Wizard?

'Psychedelic stoner doom'? Hmm...not sure about that but accept the challenge with glee 🙂

PS that Elder cover art is the shniz

OK I went through a lot of musical memories and mp3 CDs, this morning (thanks to this thread and constant flow of caffeine delivered by nice person) in pursuit of a defining sound. Started out with Dead Meadows. Nah not psychedelic enough. 5ive? Nope. Isis? 'Oceanic' has moments of extreme continental drift and thoughtful phrases but hardly psychedelic. Goat are great and everything but surely more pop than doom/metal/stoner. Colour Haze? Close, half a cigar. Let's try Japan. GMFTPO? Not doomy enough but flippin awesome inspired thrashy-prog nonetheless. Boredoms? Punk and psych rock. This is a challenge. Boris? Too Nirvana but a few LPs are more experimental and worth a ponder. Howaboit 'Boris w/Sunn O)))? As awesome as that is, it's not metal, more ambient. Scott Walker + Sunn O))). Totally bonkers pairing. Don't know whether to laugh or fall prostrate. Genius nonetheless.

So I stuck a search in youtube, and went through some compilations. Holy far-gone freakout! jimjam - I have to thank you for setting me off on this Sunday Morning subsonic über-qüest through goblin-haunted halls of howling metal jams.

Consequently think I found my holy Graal. Of course they are from Germany! Only Germany has forests so deep and dark and cold, forests so eldtritch that they could birth such occult tones, tall black trees echoing the sound of howling Valkyries/sexy witches dancing in yr face with bare beaubs, carried along on the motorik undertow of subterranean psych-blues in which swirl floating memories of Hawkwind groupies' discarded underpixies! This better had be on itunes because I have some loooong night rides planned. Sounds like I'm ripping the pi** but seriously happy about this find, it is IMHO insanely Good Stuff 🙂

Here's and old one from my youth.. While note quite stoner rock, you could stick it in a DJ set and get away with it. Maybe 😀

Do Tool still play in front of the video show with them in darkness? Last time I saw them they might as well just played CDs and stayed home.
I like to see a band if I'm paying to see them.

I think that's one of the most negative ways you could have phrased that, but yes they do still play in front of a giant video backdrop. Arguably the greatest live act in the world - their stage show is so much more than the sum of it's parts. It's an almost indescribably perfect blend of music, visuals and performance. Just incredible on every level.

Perhaps because I was 6ft away from him and he was wearing nothing but a pair of pants and glow in the dark green body paint with orange spots, seeing him wasn't difficult.

OP - this thread won't die - after reading reviews of Lore I last night discovered Motorpsycho. Can't believe they've been around since 1989 and passed me by. Norway I salute you. At times makes Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Zeppelin combined just sound lazy 😉 A word to the ears:
