[#10075542]

I was driving downhill the other day, on the way back from a ride. A road going downhill in a straight line, but there's a solid white line down the middle and a 50 Kmh speed limit (think that's 30 mph to you guys) . There's at times hikers and horses and cyclists on this stretch of road, so I think that's why there's that limit. And it is on a hill. I noticed a white van driver speeding up on me and suddenly he was in my rear view window. I was thinking surely he won't overtake as it's a solid white line, but next thing he goes for it, while probably doing 70 or 80 kmh , about 50 or 58 in your money, in a 30 zone. Beeped at him etc, but white van drivers, what can you do. Think next time I'll straddle both lanes so he can't overtake. %&£@ him .

Not safe, not legal, not necessary.

As Mr Miyagi from the Karate Kid wisely said, "A licence is no substitute for eye, ear or brain".

He was probably too hot and trying to cool it down inside. Lack of air-con is a real problem.

Probably thought the van being white was enough to keep it cool

I drive a white van, and funny enough, the other day some **** in a car overtook me dangerously. I beeped at him, but car drivers, what can you do?

I do love it when people have a go at anyone who drives a white van.

There are quite a few of them around you might have noticed, and I’m sure they’re not all driven by t@&!s.

ooh if we're doing stereotypes, can i post this pic i just took round the corner?

the street that the back of the car is parked in is incredibly narrow (because it always has cars down both sides) and i just saw a lady do a 1372-point-turn trying to turn right out of the junction. Which she has to, because it's a one way street.  I hope he's got the dented bumper he clearly deserves by now.

pillock

incidentally, to complete the stereotype bingo, about 30s after i took this pic, i then witnessed an Audi reversing 25 yards, having attempted to overtake a queue of traffic and run a red light, before encountering a series of cars coming the other way that - amazingly - wouldn't pull over and get out of his way. So selfish!

Of course, but it's the frequency of those that are driving by morons that spoil the reputation for the majority.  The reputation has built up for a reason, but anyone with a bit of sense knows not to apply it to every case......

Yesterday whilst out on my bike a bin wagon over took me at some speed. It then violently pulled back over, very nearly losing it completely. There was a car coming the other way, and I thought the worst, but fortunately the bin wagon just missed it. Actually the more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to report the incident to at least the local council, and probably the Police.

Audi and BMW stereotypes welcome.

Seriously though, and I am being serious here. Does having a white van make you feel like you have a speed exemption? Would van drivers drive safer if their vans were black...

I don't think Mercedes calling their van the 'Sprinter' helps in any way either, drivers already sprint over speed ramps and through red lights enough as it is.

If it was me being overtaken I may have thought 'idiot' but then just carried on and not bothered about it, no-one got hurt, no-one got inconvenienced etc so why worry about it?

I'm very very sorry as I own a white van and I noticed that shortly after buying it that a lot of my fellow drivers are a little shy of the van and willing to give it a bit more room and give way if it is driven a bit 'assertively'.

I'm not proud of my behaviour.

Ooh if we’re having a go. The worst drivers I find are the big SUV type drivers. The more expensive the more pushy they are. Luckily I drive old vans so very hard to be intimidated on the road and I’m polite. Moaning about van drivers means no one does online shopping then.

I don't think you are signing your approval for white van drivers to drive like dicks when you make a online purchase.  Would anyone complain if they all drove well?

No your not signing your approval but it adds to the overall stress on the roads with thousands of crap gig economy delivery jobs.

Yes it does.  But is the other option that people go out on individual journeys in their cars to buy things from shops instead?  That sounds even less efficient than a van with multiple packages?

I get the impression that new van-wise, silver is the new white.

I go the shops on my bike angeldust. ‘Tis a bike based forum after all. Or for big stuff on the way home from work to avoid unnecessary journeys. We’ll just both have to agree your wrong as the magpies are going nuts tying to get into the nets on my cherry trees so an afternoon fruit picking it is.

Always confuses me when I overtake someone and they get all upset about it and beep/flash/gesture/whatever. Would they rather I stayed behind them while they dithered around like a pensioner?

(I don't do this on 30mph limits or in a white van btw)

People driving a van that somebody else has paid for tend to cane it. Men, particularly under the age of 50, tend to cane it. Men, egged on by other men, on their way home from work tend to cane it. (Lads, off for a night out with three other lads, in their first car tend to cane it, but that's another non-van demographic). A lot of vans are white, particularly if they are just bulk-buy fleet vans so less likely to be the property of the driver. It's not rocket surgery.

If the name on a vehicle affected the driver's behaviour you'd get some right cockish goings on with Toyota Hilux Invincible drivers. Oh, I seem to have proved your point. And Mitsubishi Warrior warriors. What can you do, it's not even safe to beep at them.

Last week I stopped (well, kind of had to, to avoid manslaughter) to let a pedestrian complete his badly timed road crossing. He then waved his arms angrily at me, as if me arriving at the instant he chose to amble across the road without looking was my fault.

Pedestrians! What can you do?

Have you been to the doctors to discuss your premature flouncing problem?  Shirley, you can do better than that?

I did a coffee bean shake at one of those types overtaking a line of cars on a 30 limit road a little while ago.

He was coming towards me, taking up a lot of the road... I was on my bike.

I realised how very stupid I had been afterwards!

Oh bu99er, I was hoping to hide my general lack of driving ability and road sense by buying a silver van

How does one vehicle delivering the shopping to twenty odd households in one trip, allowing them all to stay at home and not drive to the shops twice a week add to the “overall stress on the roads” ? That needs some explaining because it sounds like a load of rubbish.

Also, I worked for OCADO/Morrison’s delivering for a while when I first moved over this way, and it was a brilliant job. Loads of early finishes on full shift pay (at least an hour early per shift worked, up to three hours early once a week maybe) never worked more than 32/33 hours/ week, always got paid for 40. Flexible shift pattern but guaranteed full time salary each month.

Easy to knock it as a “crap job” from a high horse having never done it obviously 👍

Certainly are some dumb ones, as I always heard though, It's better to be right than dead right (referring to the pedestrian in this case, I think) .
