In an attempt to speed up my cluttered lapttop, I've recently moved all my music and all Itunes to an external hard drive. When I go in to Itunes there's no library content, I've selected F drive location in preference but nowt happening. Anyone got any suggestions?

Dunno - just done exactly the same, chose the external drive as the location for the library and it worked for me (on a Mac).

Double check you did it correctly?...

Mastiles - checked it loads before coming on here in desperation. Why is this so much more complex than arranging Vinyl/tape/CDs in alphabetical order!!!

Did you just change the location and hope it would pick up the new location or re-import from scratch? I found that just changing the location was tricky with the Import/Export facility within iTunes so I changed the location then re-imported all the music by dragging and dropping the files back into iTunes (I didn't redo the CDs, I just dragged the mp4as back into iTunes.

(In fact it is rendering the 40 gig of music as I type ๐Ÿ™‚

Open iTunes in a window.

Open explorer, go to your new itunes directory where all the folders for the bands are displayed.

Selected them all (ctrl-a), drag them into the iTunes library again - it'll take iTunes a couple of mins to reindex everything.

That should do it - don#'t think I've forgotten any steps, it's what I did a while ago.

breatheasy - is it the entire itunes folder hierarchy, not just the music?

I ask because I did this, transferred to a new computer, copied all onto the new computer's HD, altered the folder settings in itunes, all seemed well, but then every time I restart itunes now it has no music in it despite the folder being the correct one. So re-import, takes ages, then it needs to get the artwork from the internet again (even though it's there already), etc.

This is iTunes 8 on Vista - I can well beleive it works properly on Mac, but on Vista at appears broken in some way. Is it the copying rather than just setting the itunes directory that is the important bit?

Sounds like what I did, though maybe I pointed it at the music folder under the itunes folder, perhaps should be the whole thing. I didn't do the 'consolidate' thing each time either, this puts the wind up me. Do I really want to do that? I'm sure I don't. Though I'm sure I relented and let it do at some point, I was thinking that's when it all went wrong.

Why is itunes so poor when the ipod so good?

porterclough - it's not the iTunes folder, it's the sub folders within - so all the band names - REM, Steps, Kylie, Clash etc. that you need to drop in
