I took a relatively mature (as in been around older siblings and their mates all his life) 7 year old. No problems if you’re OK with lots of S-words and one F-bomb. Only suggestion and post-coital chat from a sex PoV.

Any doubts on TV, films and games, Common Sense Media is always worth a read

I think it would have been fun if she had made a call to her father at the point to get Mav back in the F18, rather than him stealing it.

Dear god no. Him stealing the plane is more Maverick.

post-coital chat from a sex PoV.

We've to be very careful about giving young folks unrealistic representations of sex in film and media.

I thought they said it was Iran!

Of course it is, and of course they didn't say so! Uranium processing and an old F14... Come on, it couldn't be more obvious, but they can't SAY it.

Now had it been an errr... Chieftain Tank rather than an F14 in which they escaped, then that really would have been fiction.

Whooooooah there, you mean I can't expect to boff Jennifer Connolly when I'm in my late 50s?

@ihn maybe, she could be in her late 70s by then for all I know. I mean what ever floats your boat.

Also Tom cruise is a bajillionaire, I'm pretty sure therfore that his boffing of pretty much anyone should he wish isn't wholly unrealistic.

Loved the opening montage, thought the photography was awesome, as was his run through beggars canyon before hitting a 2m womp rat that wasn't impossible, even for a computer.
Totally jumped the shark with the jumpstarting of an F14 then the ultra short take off / Rooster being able to fly his old mans plane without any training. Also needed the admiral to spill his coffee when Mav buzzed the tower like in the original.
Oh, the closing song is shit (like, really, really shit). Really should have finished with the TG theme or righteous brothers.
And don't get me started on how old Rooster should be.
I did love it though, not sure if I'd rewatch it over the original, Would defo watch them as a double feature in the cinema if they were showing.

i saw it last night and was thoroughly entertained. Really enjoyable. Classic cheese throughout, but in a good way.

Was nice to see the GPZ900 make an appearance too!

I looooved it. Almost as much as Dune - which is the biggest compliment I can conceive of paying any movie.

So, there's loads on line about the realism of the flying sequences with the actors being up in the Hornets and no CGI.

Tomcat in the air, CGI obviously.

Now, what about the Hornets flying through the arches of the bridge. CGI shirly?

I believe there are CGI skins and the bridge is definitely CGI.

But the action is for real - bit like fury road. That's the way to go.

When film makers say no CGI it's always in context. As in no jar jar binks.

CGI is used almost on every film these days, mostly invisible.

Must be, surely no one is going to sign that one off are they? I read a lot of the low level stuff is genuine maybe the bridge is CGI'd in - but CGI done right as it's not clear what is generated and what isn't. The director did some great flying CGI in Oblivion so he has form. The only noticeable CGI was the missiles / launchers.

Bridge will have been added afterwards. But it’s great that the actors didn’t just sit in front of a green screen and get shaken around. As I said earlier, two qualified for their flying licenses during the training. But nobody actually flew a Hornet. Flew in one, sure. Given the quality, it really doesn’t matter.

The flying will be real, but anything like the bridge, or flares (mostly) or explosions would be added in afterwards to make life.

All they'll have done is film the actual flying, then manipulate those frames, there was a couple of moves, i looked at a lot of the closer flying manoeuvres as being a bit like film fights with the punches, they look closer and faster on screen than they actually were in reality.

Well that was just silly, engaging, daft, spectacular, cheesy, wonderful fun. 👍

Cheesey, cliched, relied a lot on callbacks to the original, predictable, nonsense.

And I absolutely loved it. Was glued to the screen the whole time. Tingles up my spine when the music kicked in at the start, almost cried when he first said "Talk to me Goose", loved spotting the references to the first film, bored Mrs Kenny all the way home talking about it.

Only minor disappointments were a couple of things I thought might be in it eg trembling coffee cup when he did the flypast, and no sign of "You've Lost That Loving' Feeling". I thought that would be in right at the end.

I was doubtful all those years ago when they announced they were making a sequel, but oh that was so much fun.

I feel that ‘Loving Feeling’ belongs to Kelly McGillis and without her it has no part, so I’m glad it was absent. She’s briefly portrayed in a flashback to the ‘Great Balls of Fire’ piano scene but if that was it I’m glad they left her tune in the past.

Finally got the chance to see it today. I guess the rest of the world has already seen it, there were only about 7 people in the whole cinema!

As above - it's cheesy, predictable, silly, wildly implausible for any number of boring logistical reasons but it was also very good. 🙂

Great film, really enjoyed it, although as others have said it should have finished when they landed on the carrier the song at the end was just revenue driven product placement. My favorite plot hole was the enemy helicopter lining up to shoot the downed US pilot, like they wouldn't have taken such a valuable intel and propaganda target alive!

Or that it’s cannon would have been thwarted by the rotten tree protecting the target…

I think that was one of the more minor plot holes in a film with plot holes big enough to fly an F15 through them! But hey, it was very enjoyable. Throwbacks to the original, great flying sequences, just enough low-key humour.
I'd go again although I'd like to see it on IMAX if possible.

My one question, is when does Penny’s surname get used? It was only a chance IMDB search for the character names at the interval by a friend that made me realise her significance. I think it would have been fun if she had made a call to her father at the point to get Mav back in the F18, rather than him stealing it.

Ha, ha, excellent! I've just googled it now realise who she is. I just thought it was one of those random things we're not supposed to question, but that's great actually.

I'm gonna look great when I explain that to my son in the morning!!

Will you also explain why Let's Dance is playing on the jukebox?

Great film, made me feel exactly like I did walking out of the cinema when I was 15.

Went to see this last night (should have been seeing Tears for Fears in Derby but that was cancelled!).

Thought it was OK - for me it doesn't stand up to the hype. And as has been mentioned I bloody hope George Lucas got a writing credit!

It's an 80s film rehashed for today and that style of film doesn't age well. Things have moved on.

And I couldn't stop thinking of Chris Finch every time Rooster was on screen!...

Is was grand. . . right up to the point Gosling came back to get shot down. Then it was a downward spiral and , as mentioned earlier, jumped the shark with the F14 take off

Personally i thought that because the movie never took itself too seriously, it all just fitted in with one of the biggest parts of the plot, nostalgia.

If Tom Cruise had taken this movie in a serious direction, it would have been a complete turd of a movie, that's the problem you get with a lot of Hollywood movies that turn out crap.

Just watched it today to kill a few hours, honestly thought it was absolutely ****ing ridiculous.

10/10 would watch again.

Now wondering if you can copy his F14 move in GTA Online 🤔 sounds like next sessions challenge...

Do I spend my Nectar points on downloading it from the Sky Store or do I spend some of the money on my Amazon gift card and download it to the laptop... ?

Latter has the advantage that I can take it in a long flight later this month. Former has the advantage of being on a bigger screen. Choices choices.

Had my folks round last to watch it as dad didn't want to go the cinema (TOO LOUD!).
Even my mum enjoyed and she hates films.
It's brain out flying version of Fast& Furious but with flight controls rather than gearknobs. 10/10

I watched it for the second time yesterday, it's still on at my local cinema. I enjoyed it even more second time around! I reckon I'll go for a third if it's still around in a month or so- I noticed it's also on at the Imax, so maybe there..

Watched it last night. Rented UHD on prime .

Not as good as the original .

What got me was, if they knew the exact spots of the SAMs , then why didn’t they send missles to take them out simultaneously when they struck the runway.

Not worth thinking too hard about it, the air defence was just there to pretend they needed to do the Death Star run, the TLAMs managed to safely get to their target, but again that was another plot device

If it has taken itself even slightly serious this movie would have sucked, but Tom cruise knows how to do this stuff pretty well, to give him his due.

I enjoyed it very much but if I stopped to question any of it I would have had to query pretty much the whole film.
Very lucky that when they were doing the practice runs on the target using their software programmed course that they also found a valley that matched most of the run, otherwise it would have looked pretty lame. Etc...

I find a good film I remember the plot but a popcorn movie I just can’t remember it.

I’m going to enjoy watching it again as all I remember from the first time was it felt a bit Star Warsy 🙂

It’s good entertainment and isn’t that really all you want from a movie.

I watched it last night too,I enjoyed it. The start is so similar to the first one I thought I'd rented the wrong film for a minute and had to check!

Weirdest thing I thought: Val Kilmer has throat cancer, so his character in the film does too. But then his character dies, presumably of said cancer... it seemed rather harsh! "Hey, please be in our film playing someone who dies of the very disease you have..."

To be fair, I think I read somewhere that Val literally begged to be in it.
