im liking what this porrit guy has to say

bbc news has a good feature on it

The government got completely seduced by the [Thatcherite] economic model it inherited in 1997. It felt the model should be run full on
we are not blaming thatcher here just in case anyone leaps on that one simply our blind obsession with financial gain at the expense of social and environmental concerns

its a shame hes on his way out and an even bigger shame that red blue or probably yellow government we get next will not give a fig roll for anything hes said

Not much point blaming Thatcher or the present lot for following this particular economic model, as we voted for it.

Its up to the population of the country to want to move away from the rampant consumerism pre-recession, but I don't see very many signs of that, in fact people just want to get back to it asap.

So its down to whatever future Government to basically tell the electorate that it has to change and implement those changes regardless of how unpopular it makes them.

Can you see that happening?

the government hasn't failed per se. They are not the ones who have power over the population. It's all fluff to make you feel as though you have some influence. You don't of course.

I think the flaws can be traced to two things - cowardice and lack of real thinkers.

Blair was blinded by faith - and is no great intellectual.

Failing to reverse or stop rail privatisation, failing to increase taxes in the first term, lack of intelligence ( in all senses) in going into Iraq.

who voted for it? i can't remember even 50% of the electorate voting for the current government.

I could also mention that those who voted Labour voted for a referendum on Europe, a change to the house of lords etc.

etc etc.

"We're moving further and faster, driven by a 2050 80% target set into law and strong commitment on climate change in Cabinet. Jonathan Porrit last week praised our Low Carbon Transition Plan."

"As he leaves office, Sir Jonathon accuses ministers and civil servants of failing to create a new economy fit for the 21st Century..."

So did he just spot it in his last week then ?

I can't remember any government in the UK getting 50% of the votes cast, never mind 50% of the votes available.
