Once a day is plenty. Excessive washing strips your skin of its healthy microbiome.

Hodgynd congrats to making it to sixty but you should know by now that a sample of one isn't really relevant to the whole population 😀

In mid summer when we are getting a full cylinder of hot water from my DIY panel we shower twice a day and sometimes three times if I've been cycling just to use up the water.

Tap water costs something ridiculous like £0.016 a litre, which makes you realise how much you're being ripped off when you buy bottled water.

I'll have a shower if i'm on a promise, that's not very often then!

Ahh the 70's, bath once a week on a Sunday whether you needed it or not.

Someone should correlate this thread with the bikepacking ones.

I wouldn't, the thought of a spec of dirt lying on their skin a nanosecond longer than possible would give many of this thread's contributors a heart attack. 😆

Howsyourdad..cheers ..I sometimes wonder how I got this far myself 😆
As for my comments ..fully aware that I could be pissing in the wind ..( in which case I will take another shower) but if it makes one smelly unhygenic monger stop and think then I feel that my time spent on this thread has been worthwhile 😆
( said very much tongue in cheek )

Showering more than once a day is equivalent to bleaching all your kitchen surfaces every day and using antibacterial hand soap.

First shower in three days was three days ago....

Not very convenient at the moment, mind.

As the forecast for tomorrow says rain I might find a swimming pool or sauna...

I remember my grandad having a "good wesh" at the kitchen sink.
Friday night was bath night .
Nowadays I couldn't entertain going to bed without shower or a bath.
Sometimes when the missus is away I don't bathe for three whole days. I absolutely stink and have to incinerate the bedding. Bliss.
😉

I’m clean enough Hodgy, given your years you really should have worked out how to make a point without insulting others.

Too much time looking in a mirror preening yourself I suspect.

No offence of course, smily face etc.

Once a day for me in the mornings or if going out for a ride it'll be post ride.

If I commute it'll be after commute in the morning, but no shower after the afternoon commute, if i run or ride in the afternoon/evening will sink clean any mud of my body and that'll be it.

I remember when I was a teen, only 30 now, it was weekly baths as we didn't have a shower at home till I must have been 14. I might actually try showering less, see if my skin gets better.

To horrify more, before I lived with the now wife, my bedding changing was around quarterly or when it became too covered in blood from falling off my BMX...once had the now wife, refuse to stay at mine due to the blood on the sheet and underside of the duvet and my spare set being dirty...

Wilburt..why so touchy ..did I hit a nerve ?
Unlike yourself I haven't made it personal by directing my comments at any individual nor have I said anything different to anyone else who likes a daily cleaning ritual.
As long as you are happy in your own ( multiple layers of dead ) skin ..I couldn't be more pleased for you wink wink smiley smiley etc.

I think the housemaid changes the sheets every day, otherwise there's not much for the laundry maid to do. I'll check with the housekeeper.

I get that some people have to wash more often, cos they stink otherwise - but feeling all superior because of your tendency to BO is a bit odd.

Bidets.

Fewer showers, more bidets. I mean, who wipes their arses with paper? Spreading all your excrement. Dingleberries, clag nuts, whatever.

They never really took off in the UK did they?

A bidet a day keeps the cheese away

Sometimes wiping the anal beard is a real chore. I really want a bidet or one of those japanese toilets that jetwashes the old tea towel holder while playing a tune.

Daily, before leaving the house. Generally this means in the morning.

I have very oily skin (still get acne in my 40s), so even washing the night before means I'd still want to wash my hair before going to work.

Multiple daily showers if activity requires. Otherwise too much washing makes my skin even oilier, which brings with it its own problems.

Bed sheets changed every 1-2 weeks. Towels changed twice a week. Jeans worn a few times (not consecutive days). I do the laundry at home.

Thing is at least they know that is the case or they just like to be clean and not go to bed with 24 hours of sweat/pollution/cooking smells/any other environmental aroma about their person.
There are loads of people who think they don't smell or need a shower but it's obvious they do.

Their "superiority" is much worse. what's more offensive, the bloke you sit next to in the office who thinks he doesn't need deodorant or to change a shirt or somebody who likes to shower twice a day?

When fitting our new bathroom we included a "muslim shower" next to the loo - a shower hose that can reach the undercarriage for bidet-style cleanliness after crapping.

It's also great for hosing down the campervan cassette and other assorted mucky stuff.

The one who feels smug and superior about whatever he does or doesn't do. Except me, cos I don't smell. And sit alone. For some unknown reason.

Because your calling people who dont scrub themselves down with carbolic everyday stinking mongrels or whatever it was.

That’s clearly not the case, some people like you msy dogmatically wash every day regardless, others are more flexible but equally hygenic. Seems from this thread their are arguments for both ways.

I’m sure people of either camp are equally capable of looking after their personal hygiene without the help of your smart arse comments.

I don't see anything smug or superior about basic hygiene/washing? It's not like we don't all have access to hot water and a clean towel, it's not 1950 and that snooty one at number 5 has got an indoor loo and one of those new fangled washing machines and feels the need to tell everyone!?

Hey look at me! I have a flushing toilet! 8)

As an aside I just had a quick shower after posting the above 8 minutes ago according to STW software.
It's not like you have to struggle to find the time or plan your day round doing so.

If you shower before bed it does make the bedclothes seem to last longer before needing a wash.

I wonder how the extra energy used in the showers compares to the reduced frequency of washing (and tumble drying...) the bedclothes.

Plus the shower before bed might lead to a better nights sleep.

I was thinking of one of those bidet-toilets that shoots a jet up your backside, as I tried one in a hotel once and it was good...

But I ended up with one of these douche showers, and very good it is too.

Except that I don't have good water pressure in the house so if I think I am going to 'need' it I start the hot tap running on the sink so by the time I am ready for it the spray from the shower will be warm/hot 🙂

The cost of one is offset by the amount of toilet paper you save 🙂

Wtf? Marketing really works, doesn't it? Twice a day! Get over yourselves!

you’d be a fool not to clean that gunk off at least once a day.

Gunk? If your body is oozing gunk, you've got a problem.

I didn't shower this morning. My skin is clean, odour-free and soft. My wife didn't either, and she is soft and sweet as always. You've been sold an idea of what 'clean' should be by people who make the stuff you need to be 'clean'. And smelling 'clean' does not mean stinking of chemicals.

Since marrying someone with a hyper-sensitive nose I've come to recognise and hate the stink of artificial perfumes and they are bloody everywhere. I'm not one for knee-jerk anti-establishment cynicism - I don't make my own cleaning products or knit bamboo underwear or that crap - but even one shower a day is excessive and if you think you stink without it you are either Howard Hughes or have a medical problem.

Are you sitting there sweating now? Maybe your heating is on far too high all the time?

There are loads of people who think they don't smell or need a shower but it's obvious they do.

Those people who don't stink - how do you know if they showered that morning or not?

Maybe when we build our B&B I can offer bedrooms without bathrooms for the British guests.

No idea, but then I don't care because they don't reek, I do know that not washing is highly likely to be the cause of those that do.

Also, those that stink - you don't know how long it's been since they did, do you?

They might've not washed for a week, whereas non-stinky people might've not washed for three days.

towels get used once

WHAT?!

I'm always pretty manky by the end of the day

What do you do to get manky?

Generally I shower after exercise, which makes it 3-5 times a week.

Very much more likely to be the clothes they are wearing.

There's a bloke at my club showers 3 times a day.. he also opens doors/gates with his feet, refuses to touch people, insists on spraying everyone/everything with antibacterial spray and wraps his steering wheel in tissue.

I shower maybe three times a week.. more if I train... If I needed multiple showers in one day due to smelling I'd be addressing the cause not washing more.

He quite clearly has issues – that is a disorder, not cleanliness.

Once a day before bed. Exercise after work so that works quite well. The problem comes with cycle commuting; I can’t not shower after a fast hour on the bike. Possibly irrational but there we are. I’m also required to be clean shaven for work (my face!) and can’t get away with the night before, plus my shirt needs to be ironed and then not squeezed into a bag. All of this makes cycle commuting a logistical challenge for the military chap, especially when work doesn’t have a shower!
