Since 2000,

AX GT - 6 months, wrote off.
AX GTi - approx 3½ years, sold.
Honda Prelude 2.2 Si VTEC - approx 4 years, broke for parts.
Peugeot 106 1.5D - one year, got me out of debt.
Citroen Saxo VTS - 2 years, sold.
Honda Civic Type R - approx 3 years, sold.
Honda Accord Tourer - coming up 2 years.

Buying and selling cars is a ballache so I generally stick with what I've got.

Honda MT5
Suzuki AP50

Passed test in 83

Renault 5
Austin Allegro
Mk3 Cortina
Mk2 Escort Linnet
Mk2 Granada 2.3
Mk3 Escort 1.6 Ghia
Mk2 Granada 2.8 Ghia
Mk2 Cavalier SRi
Sierra 1.8 Ghia
Mk3 Cavalier SRi

Then kids came along, money got tighter and function became more important than style!

Citroen BX
Mk2 Mondeo
Citroen Xantia
Galaxy 2.3 (3 kids by this time)
Another Xantia (I had a genuine affection for these things and if wasn't for the fact that replacing hydraulic lines are more than the car's worth I'd probably still have one)
Mk3 Mondeo (current family car)
Transit Connect
Fiat Doblo (current commuter/bike hauler)

The one that got away - before we were married the wife and I used to babysit for a couple the wife of which had a Mk1 1.3 Escort Sport. Metallic purple, quarter bumpers, bucket seats etc. I coveted that car and made the husband promise to give me first refusal if they ever sold it. Hadn't seen them for a while and asked after the car, to be told the wife had hit a dog and he'd sold it for virtual scrap because he'd thought I wouldn't want it. It had only needed a new valance and wing, I could've killed him!

Sorry over thirty cars and motor bikes by thirty and stopped counting. Sprog James, just twenty is on his tenth car/bike and my old man was the same. Lots of turn over but a few long term keepers had my Midget for sixteen years and now my biz partner has it a few years and it may return home soon, faithful Vito van 5-6 years (bought off here!). Petrolheads here, well anything mechanical that moves!

Ps some ace collections here...

Citroen ZX
Mazda MX-5
Mazda 3

Oh also registered keeper of a couple of Mrs North's:

Used to love cars and driving when younger, then fell out of love with it/them - just cycled everywhere. Now about to turn 40 and heading into mid life crisis territory and need to start owning some interesting cars.

I surprised myself, but since 1990, I have had 14 cars.

I suppose the real measure (to level the playing field), is the average cars per year , so divide total number of cars by number of years since you passed your test , which takes me to 0.54 cars per year.

In order :-

-talbot samba rallye
-peugeot 405
-Renault clio
-Peugeot 306
-MGF
-Lotus Elise
-TVR Cerbera 4.2
-Caterham 7 (still got this one)
-Fiat Coupe 20V turbo
-Honda S2000
-Audi S3
-Honda Civic Type R - FN2 (still got this one)
-BMW M3 (E92)
-BMW M135i (still got this one)

Passed test 1982. Became 2 car family with acquisition of Saab.

2CV6 Charleston - cheap car to fit large student
Citroen Visa
Citroen AXGT 1.4 - go kart
Citroen AXGT 1.4 - as above
Citroen ZX 1.4 - sensible 3 door
Saab 9000 2.0lpt - lost in flood in Cambridge sob
Citroen ZX 1.9TD - driven until worth 300ukp
Subaru Legacy 2.0 petrol - driven until scrappage scheme
Skoda Fabia VRS 1.9Tdi - Current
Skoda Octavia 1.8Tsi 4x4 - great car dodgy audi engine
Skoda Octavia Scout - Current

So 11 in 34 years (0.32 cars per year). Tend to drive them until they start to get unreliable so the Subaru, Saab and the ZXs were all 8-10 years old when they went. The VRS we have had from new and is 11 years old this year.

You know that every now and then we have 'brand loyalty' threads? well I think my Dad wins on the commitment to a brand.

On starting his first proper job in 1972, aged 20, he was given the keys to a Ford Cortina company car. after that he had a new Ford (cortinas, sierras and mondeos) every 3 years, until he retired, aged 62. (i should say, he had a choice in what car he had, not just get what he was given) What did he buy as his first, non company car? A Focus.

27 since '98, just wrote down the list:

Micra 1.0GL (lovely tin can of freedom)
Fiesta XR2 (broke down a lot)
Escort 1.6 Ghia (dull)
Escort RS Turbo S2 (better as a dream)
Mondeo ST24 (fine for getting up and down the motorway)
Escort Cosworth Lux ( a dream realised, still miss it)
Focus 2.0 Zetec (loved it)
Focus RS (adored it, hated Halfords interior)
Golf GTI Mk4 (truly woeful)
Elise S1 (loved it)
Elise S1 Sport 160 (loved it more, engine had so much character)
Focus Mk1 (go to everyday car)
M3 (E46) (wonderful)
911 Carrera (996) (great until you try and get anyone in the back)
Exige S1 (VHPD) (loved it, should have never of sold)
M3 CSL (wonderful)
Exige S1 (Supercharged K20a) (converted myself it was a work of art by the end)
Exige S S2 (my baby)
M3 (e92) (good, but getting a bit too big)
V8 Vantage (loved the idea, reality was different)
Z4M (didn’t know what it wanted to be, but loved the engine)
Focus ST ( stop gap car I fell in love with despite being chavy)
C250d (a symbolisation of everything that can be wrong with a modern car, pure style over ability)
330D (F30) (loved it, best real world car I ever had)
335D (F30) (lovely power handling ruined by 4WD and drove like an Audi, was glad to get rid of it)
330D (F30) (as per first one)
430D GC (better than the three, more usable)

Doesn't include other half cars, those are all mine but I have normally run a fun car and a normal car for everyday for me for the last 15 years or so. So day to day I have been driving a focus or golf most of the time with a fun car in the garage which get changed more frequently, normally changed at a point when I won't loose money or have crept in value slightly so it doesn't cost as much as some think. And 4 of them have been company cars

I know enjoying cars is frowned upon on here and I accept every time I have enjoyed getting in a car, a baby or kitten has died a horrible death somewhere...

5 since 2003.

- Peugeot 306 Dturbo. Got nearly 100,000 miles out of it (bought with 30,000 odd on the clock). Loved that car, not just 'cos it was my first.
- Skoda Octavia Estate 1.9TDi 4x4. Nearly got to 200,000 miles (bought ex-demo).
- VW California 180PS. Traded in after a year and a bit with 15,000 miles on it, for not much less than it cost.
- Skoda Octavia Scout 2.0Tdi 4x4. Bought to replace the estate that died.
- VW California Beach 140PS. Bought as a toddler friendlier replacement for other van.

Fingers crossed there won't be any need for changes to the fleet for at least the next 5 years...

I didn't start driving until I was about 19 or 20. When I passed my test I used my Mum's car on her insurance for a bit.
Then a friends of the family gave me his old Renault 5 - what a heap of shit that turned out to be, cost me a fortune in repairs!

So:
Renault 5 (C reg)

Nissan Micra (K reg) my grandfather's old car given to me when he had to stop driving. Had very scratched bumpers and corners...

Citroen Berlingo (V reg). Finally a decent quality car that was only 3 years old capable of carrying bikes and of me sleeping in the back of it and that shouldn't be costing me thousands in garage bills each time but I had to sell it 18 months later due to financial problems.

Fiat Marea estate (R reg) Another banger that ended up costing loads in garage bills although it did at least run on veg oil!

Ford Mondeo estate (V reg) Again, a bit of a banger but very reliable. Got written off when I hit some debris on the motorway one night.

Vauxhall Vectra estate (58 reg). The old works pool car; it's 2-year lease expired a couple of months after I'd written off the Ford so I bought it direct from the lease company.
Had that for 5 years now, longest I've ever owned one car.

Cars have never been anything other than functional for me - the Mondeo and Vectra are about as boring as you get! Just pure motorway cruising big estates for carrying bikes and camping gear.

Passed my test in 2004, and since then I've had:

H reg VW Golf, 1.3 petrol
E reg Ford Sierra, 2.0 petrol
X reg Ford Focus, 1.6 petrol
N reg Land Rover Discovery, SVO commercial, 2.5 300TDi
Smart car, work vehicle
R reg Ford Escort
54 reg Hyundai Coupe, 1.6 petrol (wife's car really, and our current vehicle)
61 reg VW Caddy, work van
And as of Friday, the 61 reg Caddy has gone and been replaced with a 65 reg new model Caddy

Bookmarking this thread for when I need to answer all your "what was your first car" security questions on website logins.

I've had half a dozen I think, passed my test in 1990 or thereabouts. Mk1 Fiesta, Mk3 Escort, MkFroggy Scorpio and three Cavaliers. Oh, and a CB500 if we're including bikes.

I've spent half of my driving life in company cars though. A succession of truly dreadful normally-aspirated diesel Fiestas, an Astra when work finally caved in to the idea that the Fiestas weren't fit for purpose, a Vectra, Passat, Mondeo and the current Hyundai i40. Probably a number of others as stop-gaps at varying points too, had an A6 for a few months, and some dirty great big Merc (E-class I think).

Out of the lot, the best I've owned was probably either my first Cav (I adored that car) or the Scorpio (terrible exterior design but you don't see that when you were driving it and the interior was luxurious). Best including company cars has to be the mighty Mondeo, head and shoulders the best motor I've 'owned' for any length of time.

Since I passed my test in 1975, just the four:-

Renault 6
Sierra
Mondeo estate
Astra

So I've had way more bikes* than cars 🙂

*That's proper bikes, not those horrible noisy things with engines!
