Moved in to my place in January. It's a 4 bed semi. It joins next-door in sort of an L shape, so most of the property is actually detatched. 2 adults plus 1 infant.

During January through to March we were using £90-£100 of gas a month. It seemed way over to me, we only had the heating on for an hour in the morning and then a few hours in the evening.

I've checked it for the last month and the heating has been off pretty much every day. Still about £33, surely that's too high just to cover cooking and showers?

Not sure what to do! Any suggestions appreciated...

Something seems wrong. We used to heat a big 5 bedroomed house leaving the heating on 24 hours in the coldest parts of the winter for £100 a month. Low usage cooking and showers should be £20 pcm ?

you either have a gas leak are paying off a previous debt or a broken meter

I use about £5 for all that and I do a lot of cooking and baking

as for the heating has been off pretty much every day - its summer - if you put your heating on in w summer you may use loads in winter and may underestimate your usage

FWIW mine costs about £1 an hour to use the CH

50p's worth of gas will blow a house so it's unlikely to be a leak. You'd smell it.

£33 pm over summer usage isn't extraordinary to be fair. I've seen better and worse.

Is your water gas? Tank or combi etc?

What's your tariff? I just this week had a statement to show our 3 bed semi was going though £170 a month over winter on gas and elec - a quick "wtf?" Call to the company and it seems our fixed rate deal had ended and they put us on the full rear insertion rate, fixed now, but wasn't happy.

Sounds fairly normal. Our 4 bed bungalow is around that.

That does sound a bit high to me, but might depend if you're on a decent tariff or not?

Our 4 bed detached with rumbly old boiler costs us on average through the year £90/month for gas & electricity.
It generally spikes during the winter months to around £120/month but then drops right down from April to October.

You mention the times for the heating, but not the hot water. How do you control that and how long is it on for per day.

what do you people do ? just checked min £40 of gas since end of March
- 5 hour showers?

I bake loads as well so its not uncommon for the oven to be on for a few hours a day I suspect without that its about £20

3 Bed semi with 2 adults - we average about £35 a month over the year, can be as high as £90 a month in the depths of winter and less than a tenner a month April to Sept.

Ours is about that, 30s semi with a fairly recent combi boiler, family of 4.

As said, check tariff. I also find that now we're back to typical british summer if you leave windows open overnight the temperature can drop enough for the thermostat to kick in if it's set to 19-20 - you can end up with heating starting up without really realising it.

Seems high to me, 3 bed Victorian Terraced house (low efficiency) and we average about 80p/day over a year (do use a log fire a lot in winter). 30+ yr old gas boiler as well 🙂

Check what tarrif you are on. We recently like you moved house and by default had to be supplied by the previous ocupiers energy supply. They put us on a variable tarrif which bassically meant they can charge what they want. It ended up as aprox twice the price as what we usually pay.

3 bed terrace, one occupant, home all day so heating in the winter is pretty much constant.

For gas the worst of the winter months was £115, in the summer I had 3 months where it was less than £13, Monthly gas average for the year is just under £60 on a standard tariff. Combined with electricity the monthly average is £102.

I've been shopping around this week and it looks like I could get about £200-250 annual reduction on the dual fuel bill by changing suppliers from British Gas.

Luxury..!

LPG in a 60s bungalow. First winter here BWB* and we went through £500 of gas a month to heat the place (shower + cooking all electric).

Don't know you're born etc.

Wow, anyone with the word 'Green' in their title is offering unlimited gas 😯

How does their website even have the nerve to imply gas is a renewable energy source?!
