Dad is picking up some more primer and black spray this evening after work so I can begin spraying some stuff thus evening.
I have cleaned up the part of this pipe that is visible when mounted, can't decide if to do the rest or not...

I've also taken the silencer back to a polished finish. Due to a perfectly timed phone call from a friend I forgot to take before pictures but I do have a spare silencer off dad's YZ just to give you an idea...

nice, i love hondas. i have a hankering for a cr480 since discovering them by chance a few months back.
BUY IT
Be careful with that lacquer - you need to apply several coats or the rust will soon be back.
It's the fork lowers that are receiving lacquer. They've had 5 coats this afternoon and are now back on the bike.
I've primed front brake assembly, clutch lever, front calliper and radiators and these will all be sprayed matt black tomorrow and then given a couple of coats of lacquer then refitted.
That'll be the entire front end restored once this is done. Then it's working my way back from there. Possibly replacing all hoses, new inlet manifold, new header pipe, new kick start shaft and gear. That's the aim to be purchased and fitted by the end of next week.
Will get some snaps up of everything primed and then sprayed black tomorrow.
nice job 🙂
new header pipe
That expansion chamber is not beyond repair you know?
I've got much worse dents out that the ones in that.
*What you need to do is fashion some bungs that seal of the ends of the pipe. (One of the bungs will need a valve in it)
Then put around 100psi into the chamber.
Now use a welding torch to CAREFULLY heat the dents and watch them pop out.*
You do this at your own risk though. 🙂
Sounds like a good idea Stu. I didn't realise it was so simple to DIY. I will give it a go and keep as a spare and still buy a new one.
Could I use old inner tube and stretch it over the end of the tubes, cable tie or jubilee clip it tight and use the valve from the inner tube to pump 100 psi? Hmm...Some fettling will occur tomorrow this is for sure!
I have a few pics to upload then I will provide an update of today's work.
What are the bearings like in the headstock? Seems the perfect opportunity to replace whilst the front end is in bits.
They are ok. No real need for a replacement on these yet. All the bearings throughout were done recently apparently and they all feel good.
Here's the work from the last couple of days. Had a bit of a setback with the radiators as the primer didn't take very well first time round so I took it back to metal and cleaned them and viola problem solved.

I have since lacquered the levers and front brake assembly and will be installing these in a minute and take some photos. Needs a new hydraulic hose for front brake and im going to replace all radiator hoses so I won't be putting rads back on yet.
Will probably attempt to remove rear brake drum this evening too and prepare and primer that.
Very interested in this but cant help thinking your missing out on some essential bits while its all apart.
Your comment above about bearings shows exactly this attitude.
No matter when they were done, if the bike is apart I'd be making sure the races and rollers are thoroughly cleaned, inspected, degreased and repacked with RG2 (THE ONLY grease for MX bikes 😉 )
Same goes headstock(are they old style loose ball on that age?), swingarm, shock and both wheels.
Like what your doing as I love tinkering up the garage but when its done to that degree then I find being extra meticulous pays off dividends in the long run.
EDIT: Writing that as your post was posted. You have taken the time to strip things down and repaint....although not removing nuts, bolts, washers, bungs, rad caps etc means your just polishing a turd.
Getting kind of wound up here over this as its restoration at its worst.
Ehhhh...If i'm perfectly honest I'm in no rush to do everything. I intend to completely restore it but not this year. Itll be completely done by March 2015. It will all get done in time.
Just found out tonight needs a new part in the clutch basket and that the centre bolt holding the basket in is a ****er to get off...
I'm seeing it as a 2 stage resto. Stage 1 is unfortunately tidy it up best I can and get it running ready to ride, rush job. Stage 2 will be over a longer period replace everything. Bearings, cables, oils, etc. I'd like to buy myself a second engine to rebuild as practice.
Yeah, I think, looking at your last photos that your going to screw this up long term. Your painting and lacquering over things that shouldn't be. Like the sight glass on the front brake reservoir!
It seems you're basically just painting and then lacquering over the entire bike, which isn't a restoration by my reckoning.
Ooh a lovely doctor big 😛
Sancho, I'm liking your Marlboro Doctor Big but surely it should have been Lucky Strike.
OP listen up and get greasing whilst things are apart. It'll make it far easier when you start the mechanical restoration. I understand your reasoning with regard to cost but a tin of quality grease is about the same as a tin of heat resistant paint. Talking of which you shouldn't primer your rads as you want as little paint on there as poss and the primer will probably react to the heat resistant paint.
In all fairness I am rushing a bit and I have annoyed myself in doing so. That bike does look lovely. I haven't sprayed over the sight glass. There was tape down over it cut into a circle.
I'm considering leaving it until the end of the month and in the meantime building up a list of parts that I need to buy come pay day and also take on board the advice to strip and re grease all bearings. It's what I'd do on a mtb so why am I reluctant to do it on something 5x as likely to kill me ill never know...cue some more pics of me doing things properly soon...Thanks all!

I have completely gutted the frame. Taken everything out and will now work my way through every single part cleaning/re greasing and/or replacing as I need to. I feel much better about the 'logic' behind how I'm now working so thanks for the somewhat harsh but true criticism!! More pics tomorrow probably.
Good man. Much better approach. A good looking MX bike is all well and good but these are race weapons that take a beating. You'll be much happier riding it knowing that it's mechanically sound, bolts are tight and all the bearings, linkage etc are greased and running smooth.
You are absolutely right. I'm considering attempting an engine strip/clean/rebuild myself so I also know that everything is tight there as I think the last guy installed the kickstart shaft/gears incorrectly...
That's more like it.
A proper rebuild will be much better that a bit of paint and polish.
I'd forget how shit the welding was on some bikes from that era.
Your frame has just reminded me. 😆
SSS my frame is immaculate for its age. Recently powder coated and nothings been bodged onto it.
If I can get some pics of my dad's frame before it went back together, we must have some somewhere. There are bits of dodgy welding everywhere on his! For example, there was 2 shock mounts, 1 welded inside the other slightly lower down so they could fit a different shock!
Might be immaculate/original but blind pews made better chicken shit than that yolks welds......
Haha I dont disagree with the statement of shitty welding!
How's the restoration going - I was enjoying watching the progress.
