So I said this:

So yeah it's nice for the guy to get the money, but he's being used for entertainment purposes and to make the guy giving the money look good, video go viral (make money?) etc.

So exploitation is harsh, he hasn't been, not really, I happen to think that the problem isn't him getting the money for appearing in a Youtube video, which earns the channel owner some money.

What I think is the problem is that a lot of people on here and on Youtube and Facebook seem to believe that this stunt restores faith in humanity.

So the homeless guy wanted to share the money with the guy who gave it to him, that is not strange, if someone did me a favour that involved me being massively in pocket that person would also benefit, I'm fairly sure most of us would do the same, so why not a homeless person?

Wow a homeless person does a nice thing to the person who has just given him a grand, who would have thought it eh?

What does that say about us?

I hope it was a sign that his luck has changed properly, not for just one moment.

But there was no luck involved.

Serious question...if they donated their profits to charity, would you still consider it exploitation?

I would still see it as a stunt, and therefore not real kindness.

Is not real kindness as good as real kindness?

If all of those negative traits you mentioned (deceit, manipulation. commercialism) manifested themselves in a similar way to this "good deed", the world would probably be a better place.

Would it?

I cancelled my Oxfam DD, as my wife was being harassed virtually daily to start donating. Some of their 'selling' techniques were disgraceful. One involved asking if she was a mother, then asking how would she like it if our kids were starving to death.

Out of the charities that I support Oxfam is one of the few who don't hassle me for more dosh - maybe they've lost my details 8)

Of course it was luck nick! What's the chances of someone pulling a stunt like this? Then what's the chances that you're the guy they pick to benefit? He might not have won the lottery, but his luck was certainly in that day! I think you're looking at this far too cynically.

What I think is the problem is that a lot of people on here and on Youtube and Facebook seem to believe that this stunt restores faith in humanity.

Nick, no one said anything like that at all in this thread. People mainly said it made them smile. His reaction demonstrated a lovely side of a society often plagued by greed.

So the homeless guy wanted to share the money with the guy who gave it to him, that is not strange

No it's not strange. But that doesn't make it any less heartwarming to me.

Would it?

A few years ago there was a video called Bumfights where guys make a lot of money by paying homeless people to fight each other.

In this video a guy makes a lot of money by making a homeless guy feel really good and giving him $1000.

You honestly can't see the difference in those two scenarios?

Presumably you think Secret Millionaire is exploiting people too?

clearly the guy only gave the homeless guy $1000 to help line his own pockets so basically exploitative well off guy seeks out homeless character which fits his profile requirements & lets the camera roll, now if he pulled this stunt & then donates his Youtube earnings from it to a homeless charity then thats a different matter but the cynic in me suggests that is not the case ๐Ÿ™

Do you consider that the homeless man has been treated unfairly?

Wwould you suggest the homeless man has been treated unfairly?

No - but I would suggest he wouldn't be so keen to part with some of his "winnings" if he knew how much his benefactor was making out of him & to be truly non expoiltative he should have subsequently been offered a decent percentage cut

I find that totally nonsensical.

The homeless guys innocence & beauty of character has been exploited by the film maker, I'm sure he is quite happy with the $1000 as would most people homeless or not, the sad thing is that the ulterior motive is the exact opposite of what has been captured on camera ๐Ÿ™

Never before have so many people been offended by helping the homeless. I donate money partly for the feeling of wellbeing it gives, is that explotative too? Maybe I should only donate to bad charities, or angry homeless people.

I wonder how he spent it? Imagine being in his position and suddenly acquiring that kind of money. I imagine it would take a lot of hard thought to make the best of it without losing it. It's not like he can just bank it.

What would YOU do?

I think the phrase "causing a fight in an empty hoose" applies here.
