Fast asleep, house in silence, suddenly the TV is on very loud downstairs! Wtf I think? Burglars was my only rational thought, pressing the remote in the dark. Head downstairs ready for some action, nothing, no one, just Danny Trejo wielding a machine gun on the back of a truck. I'm a little restless now.....

I had that once - heard someone running down the stairs - shot out of bed naked, ready to face off with an intruder.

Turned out something loose had fallen down the chimney and had banged against the sides on the way down.

Yep done that a couple of times johndoh.

First , home on my own , last thing if done outside for the night was put the wing of my land rover on the chassis so it looked fitted, but not bolted it to anything.

Wind picked up. It fell over , i heard this in my sleep, got up looked out , pir lights are on front and back. Straight outside in the pishing rain.

Second , just last week. Did the washing up of recycling and put them on the drainer.just drifting too sleep and i hear glass loudly clinking together a few times. Woke wide awake then managed to think about it rationally...glass bottles on the drainer justnfell over.

The glass shower screen in our ensure self detonated last year in the middle of the night.

40kg of glass hitting a slate floor wakes you up good and proper!

I had a large glass picture frame which fell off the wall and into the stairs once on the early hours. Convinced someone had put a brick through the window

I'd love to know what caused the OP's telly to burst into life - any updates?

My story; I woke up at about 04:00 one Summers morning. I didn't know why but something felt wrong. I couldn't fall asleep again so I got out of bed and went for a pee. As I came out of the toilet I glanced sideways down the stairs and into the hall.

The front door of the house was wide open!

I went back into the bedroom and woke my wife. I told her to pick up the telephone and be ready to call the Police. I rummaged around in the bedroom and found my Divers Knife - large fixed blade! and headed downstairs, naked, to kick the shit out of a Burglar or get the shit kicked out of me 🙁

Heart was racing and I was feeling pretty vulnerable - but there was no one there! Nothing was missing and the door was just wide open. No idea what happened even now - 15 years later.

Whilst trying to get back to sleep i did a quick Google to calm my overactive mind and apparently updates are a common thing within smart tvs between 1 and 3am, this happened in that time slot. However it turned the sky box on as well...

One winter about 5 years ago we were woken up by the sound of smashing glass.
I jumped out of bed fist clenched and raised ready to confront a burglar. I crept downstairs- living room empty, through to the kitchen, nothing. Thought maybe a glass had fell from the draining board, nope. Went outside, cars were fine.

Confused I went to the toilet. Glass all over the sink and floor, the inner pane of glass had exploded. I was too wired to sleep by that point though.

After having actually been burgled at night, it took me several years to be able to ignore the smallest sounds in the night.

I heard banging once.

Went downstairs only to find my flat mate rogering his girlfriend on my couch.

Told them I had an early start so keep it down.

When living in a flat a good few years ago I kept my bikes in the hall. Middle of the night one of my road tyres exploded. 100psi gone in an instant. Pretty much the whole block was up. Made me jump but kinda new what it was. Nearly killed my yet to be wife.

My dad's van got broken into and all his tools stolen from in front of our house when I was a kid, maybe 11 or 12, being a bit spooked I thought I'd take my gun to bed the next night(.177 air pistol that could fire pellets, darts or bb's). Had it fully loaded with steel bb's, cocked safety on.

Awoke in the night to a loud bang, nearly shat myself, didn't notice the pain at first, turned out I'd pushed the safety off in my sleep and shot myself in the leg! Luckily didn't break the skin hardly at all, bruised bad though!

I'm I right thinking it was the Stone Roses second album where the CD has 90 or so silent tracks after the last song.... then another song. So 20 minutes after you'd dozed off suddenly there was music again.

Nirvana's Nevermind did that. Bastards cost me a C60 to pirate it when would have fitted onto one side of a C90. (-:

I used to own a TV which without warning would go to full volume for a few seconds.
My family used to complain it scared them senseless in the middle of the night.
I then gave it to my cousin Kevin and it proceeded to do the same to his family.

I woke up one summer morning to what sounded like really loud banging on our door. Went downstairs (with big stick) and found, eventually, that something seemed to have got in through an old catflap (that should've been locked but the kids used to fiddle with things and had set it to "in but not out") and then smashed its way back out again, blowing the catflap still in the frame straight out of the door and about 10 feet into the garden.

Not clear what the creature was - I struggle to imagine that a cat would be that scared or that strong to do it

Used to have a stereo that was always left on. One night we had a power cut and when the power came back on the CD player started playing and I'd left the amp nice and loud. Soon woke me up!

Filled my fridge with 48 little bottles of beer one afternoon. During the night, while we were fast asleep, the shelf must have sagged, the beer slid forward and pushed the door open. Cue a massive crash and lots of loud bangs like gunshots as the bottles hit the floor and blew their tops. Plus an eerie light from the fridge. I swear I made it halfway across the bedroom without touching the floor in complete "fight or flight" mode before I even woke up!

Took teenage son and mates into town for a night out, and they were planning on staying in town with one of the group. Thought no more of it and went to bed.....woken at about 3am by somebody climbing in through the bedroom window, accessible from the roof as it's a dormer. Leapt out of bed shouting and ready to eject the body that was half way into the room. Just about to make contact when the boy realises what's coming and calls out. Took a while for everyone to calm down ! Said he didn't want to ring and wake us up.

was woken one night by a massive crash followed by tinkling sounds. Sounded like a window had gone, but after running around there was nothing wrong, and looking out at the cars parked by the side of the house everything was OK. Went out the following morning and a length of cast iron gutter had fallen off, into the small gap between house and car and then shattered.

Had the same as the OP this week. Turned out to be my youngest messing with the tv remote, setting viewing reminders on the guide. Said reminders turn the telly back on if it's on standby. Took us a while to figure it though!

I've also had basically the same thing as the op, I was looking after someone's dogs while they were on holiday so unfamiliar house, I was just dozing off on the sofa at 3am when the tv turned on to static in front of me, creeped me the right out. Turned out it was a smart tv, doing an update. Though I was still a bit wary of that particular tv after that 😉

It would. We used to have one of those catflaps when I was a kid. We were all in the kitchen talking and the catflap suddenly exploded and the cat was halfway up the stairs before we knew what was going on. No idea what had scared her so much, and she didn't seem injured. Catflap was smashed.
