Anyone done the above?

Seen an opel somethingorother (not available in the UK) for about 140 quid for four days but would rather something more exciting to be honest... airport pick up far more convenient than in the city though. Any suggestions, without spending much more?

also, any general touring tips in the area? Gorge du Verdon, nice, menthon, Monaco etc...?

Gorge du Verdon is 100% worth a visit, as are several other gorges and passes in the area (Col de Turini for example). Monaco worth a drive round to say you've been there, but do not expect to be able to stop and have a wander. The place is chocablock with zero parking. Better to catch the train there if you wanted to look about.

Dalius Gorges is also worth a visit.

We found parking in Nice really expensive. Made the mistake of hiring a car when we arrived then paying €€€ to park it underground for 4 days whilst we took public transport everywhere, before driving it north on a road trip. If we did it again, we would hire from in town if we were going to stay there for a few days first. IIRC the car hire places are just off the Promenade des Anglais at the foot of the main street.

It's easy to get parking in Monaco

I've been 3 or 4 times and always found a space in the underground car park that's near the casino

I'd recommend Gorge du Verdon too. Also some lovely places up in the hills. Biot, Grasse, Saint Paul de Vence, Eze, I didn't see enough of Menton to get an opinion of the place, just passed through

Hope you've at least considered a cycling holiday - Nice airport is easy to cycle from, the verdon gorge and passes of the alpes maritime are great on 2 wheels (I believe MTBing is good too but haven't tried it). We have also been to ventoux on the same trips.

thanks all - looks like the opel is the only affordable option 🙁

thanks for the tips too! will have a think about monaco access.

thecaptain - already done that twice - the gorge, ventoux and the coast... but the missus doesn't ride as much as i do and i'd rather motor round than sweat my tits off again...

Go over the border into Italy - Ligurian Riviera. Some beautiful places along the coast - avoid the bigger resorts and travel into the hills. So much better than France (I'm biased, though).
Oh, and theres no french people 😉
