[#4867648]

Need to pick a car online for an upcoming ski break.
But not sure which models I can fit two snowboard bags into.

Im assuming I can fit them in a Meriva with the seats down (front passenger seat will be occupied by Mrs S), can I fit them in a VW Golf similarly?

Many places that serve the ski resort areas will do a roof box for your tea tray to sit in. Worth checking to see if anyone does that sort of package. Also re snowchains.

Decided where you're going yet? RadDadSnoBoarderToTehMAX! 😉

My mate has come through a legend and we can stay at one of his folk's places in Morzine. Got the flights sorted with sleazy, emptying my BA Miles account on a car. Should get 5 days of skiing in for Mrs S and I for less than £700. Get in!

Trying to avoid using a rack, would rather just throw the board in the back. Also they charge a fortune for winter kits and racks. £20+ a day for each.

One of the best places I've skied in recent years. If you've not been before I'd just look at getting day passes for the lifts as out of Morzine you've got the choice of a few areas, worth heading up to Avoriaz on a good weather day, plus you get bonus RadDad Gnarr points for going down 'The Stash'

been many times. Just not for the last 7 years thanks to a debilitating condition called "children". 😀

My mates place is on the road up to Avoriaz just out of town.

Last time we were there I took the bike, but it was between seasons. Riding the bike along this was amusing...

I put my mates board, in a bag, in the back of my Focus the other day. I just folded down the 40% single seat and put it in at an angle on its side. If there are only two of you in the car it will be plenty easy to fold down the whole bench and put them in diagonally.

When are you going to Morzine? I fly out in 10 days.

flying out March 10.

I think Ive got enough points to get the Group E Compact, "Group E - Opel Meriva or similar, Compact, 4-5 door, Automatic Transmission, Air Conditioning" which should do - think thats the Focus sized Group.

The focus is slightly bigger than a golf I think but I'm not sure how the categories work.

According to this the boot length of the old shape Merivia is 1580mm so there should be plenty of room.

cheers I_A

have pushed go on the BA site. Had completely forgotten about them and they sent me a club card statement email a few hours ago. Didnt even know they did car hire on the scheme but went for a look, and whaddayouknow, £250 of car hire for nothing. And these are miles racked up in a previous life 9 or 10 years ago that we hadnt got round to using on anything.
Bargin.

Meriva's a bit smaller than a Focus isn't it?

In fact, just thinking about it, if you do get a Meriva, you're going to need a sunroof!!

I doubt I'll even get a Meriva. They'll probably just give me something french on the lot.

EDIT: just checked and apparently they do have these in Geneva:

Looks big enough, anyway. Even if a bit gopping.

I've stuck snowboards on the back seat of a golf sized car bofore. stick em in the foot well, they'll be reet. Then you're bags can go in the boot. Then when you're driving round resort just drop the back seat and lob everything in there.

Rather a sunroof than needing to tape blocks of wood to the soles of my feet to reach the pedals 🙂

Aren't you a bit, y'know, tall to be able to snowboard? 😛

What totalshell said...

Several yrs ago we went snowboarding in Austria, but flew into Munich & drove down. We had 2 snowboard bags as well as 4 adults and a 3.5 yr old.

Looking at the available cars & specs, we chose a Vectra estate, with winter tyres & a child seat.

When we turned up our car (can't remember what it was) was no way big enough, didn't have winter tyres or a child seat. Took ages to persuade them to swap it & the best they could do was a c-max and we had to go to the top floor of the car park to pick up a knackered child seat from a bloke who virtually threw it at us from his store/office.

As far as we could tell they completely ignored the order & just gave us what they had. The c-max is 'large estate' because that's what is said on the computer screen...

I can get two board bags plus gear in the back of a VW Polo, you should be fine in any of the cars you mention!

Remember boards go from the corner of the boot to the corner of the passenger seat, and if you get them wedge up in the air you get even more room.

Just strap them to the roof? I've had 4 board bags on a little 2 door ka.
Open doors and feed through, make sure you put a few twists in the strap to stop noise.
Drove all over the uk with 2/3 surfboards on the roof with out a rack.

I've not seen many hire companies guarantee a certain car. When ordering it's usually a band and a "like a" statement, and if booking online a photo of what the car could be.

Hiring skis is usually the same.

I hire cars quite a bit in the UK, I think I've been upgraded to a better car than the band I've paid for nearly every time (but then I'm a regular customer).

You can get magnetic roof racks for boards and skis quite cheaply - if this is going to be regular - maybe invest in one.

I've hitch hiked with skis bigger than a board and they've gone in every car that's stopped - between the front seats slightly skewed so the driver can still change gear. Take the bindings off and boards will go alongside the passenger seat next to the door.
