i use insurance 4 car hire. i had to claim once. relatively painless but of course i had to pay the car hire company first and then reclaim the money spent.
under £50 a year
I'm interested to hear folk's success in claiming on it. We had an incident on holiday a couple of weeks ago...
In France, hired at the Swiss side of Geneva airport. My mate was the hirer and driver. He has an annual excess cover policy.
On the last day we were leaving the underground carpark below our hotel. It was a very tight exit and we had a large car. My mate was driving very slowly round a corner and exiting the car park which had a security shutter door that was open.
As he was slowly driving through the exit, the shutter door suddenly started to close with the car underneath it! He panicked, stuck it in reverse but couldn't go far as it was a tight exit. He managed to reverse just enough that the closing shutter door missed the car.
Unfortunately, in all the confusion and panic. He thought he'd put the car in reverse again but he'd actually put it in forward (it was an auto) and he drove forward into the shutter doors damaging them and the car. Door was buckled, headlight smashed on the car and some other scrapes.
Hotel staff appeared and took statements. He dropped the car off at the hire desk and gave statements there. Hire company have sent him an invoice for €1500 as that was the excess he had with them. He's submitted that claim to his excess insurer.
We have no idea how easy they'll reimburse him for the claim of if these insurers try every trick to avoid paying out?
