[Closed] Hifi / Audio bods - is "reprocessed" gear anything to worry about?

Hi

As above, looking for a piece of kit and one option seems to be 'reprocessed by the manufacturer'. It comes with about 140 quid saving over new (about 15%) and 12 months warranty.

Any experience of buying stuff this way? Not keen if I'm going to get something used and scratched up etc.

15% off doesn't seem enough of a saving to me. Probably totally fine but I'd go for new at that price. 30% off would be tempting.

So not "refurbished" then?

Uses re-processed rather than refurbed, which is why I'm a bit confused as to whether its used and returned or just items that may have been displayed or such like. Agree with taxi that 15% makes the risk dubious.

Assuming that reprocessed means essentially new but returned with a fault and fixed:

For a (single?) piece of hifi equuipment costing a grand, I'd be looking to see who had reprocessed it - if it was the mfr themself (and esp if they're a "proper" firm - though I don't know my hifi that well, you may do), I'd say crack on. Their reputation is presumably as at-stake as would be for their brand new kit.

I'd check the warranty of the same new item because 12 months is a poor deal and doesn't sound right to me.Most have 2 years and many 3.If it's Richer Sound's then take out their refundable 5 year warranty. If it's not eligible then there's your answer.

Can you ask them what's been done to it? Most of these things are distance selling returns - usually it simply means it's 'open box' or non-original packaging and they've tested to ensure it's working

I've asked the retailer and got a vague answer. No problem with warranty in that they will treat it lke a new product, just restricted to 12 months. For the relatively small saving I think I will wait and try and pick up a new one at some time. I missed out on Black Friday when some really good offers were around. Its a Naim Muso btw.

Thanks nick1962. I'll be giving it a swerve! Really don't want to spend that amount of money on something essentially second hand!

Not sure if this is a better deal but Severn Oaks have one with £300 off: https://www.sevenoakssoundandvision.co.uk/p-37800-naim-mu-so-reprocessed-wireless-speaker-system.aspx

Bear in mind that one of my clients is a Naim competitor, but to me reprocessed means that it will be a customer return with no fault given as reason.
I would assume they've been inspected and re-tested and cleaned by Naim, but not refurbished.

What's odd is that they are not giving the same 24-month warranty.

That said, I'd probably take a punt. Naim have a full workshop and will carry out repairs for as long as they can get parts (they are still repairing vintage equipment). They normally go above and beyond and will probably sort you out if there's any doubt as to why it broke.

I imagine that they get a lot or returns just for people's wi-fi performance and networking issues alone.
