Looking for something I can watch tonight with a couple of beers, rental from itunes (or other official online source).

Something with a bit of action and comedy, well scripted but slipped below the radar, considering "hunt for the wilderspeople", which I do want to watch but not sure I am in the mood for that particular film tonight. What are your recommendations?

Romancing the Stone. A bit of action and a bit of comedy, a film about a hidden gem?

Ok, maybe not.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. ?

I really liked it, even if it is Henry Cavill's job application for Bond.. 🙂

I have to say I agree with Kermode about Pain & Gain, and I only watched 20 mins of it, in fact his review is far more interesting than the film could ever dream of being.

I have watched, the guard and kiss kiss bang bang, and enjoyed them both. God bless America, would be another that I have also seen but is the kind of thing I fancy watching.

Men from uncle took me 3 sittings to actually finish watching it, very meh.

Good bye Lenin is looking most likely at the moment, linked with run lola run on IMDB which is a fantastic film.

Deadpool a hidden gem???

+1 for Bone Tomahawk although there is no comedy. Blue juice is a classic and if you're considering Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do In The Shadows is a brilliant film by the same director.

kiss kiss bang bang,

Beat me to it. Probably the best action comedy I've seen. You could check out Shane Black's follow - Nice Guys. I haven't seen it myself yet though.

Agree about Pain and Gain. Wretched shit.

The Guard is brilliant.

Recently enjoyed Blue Ruin, a kind of anti-revenge movie which I'd highly recommend.

So I'll instead recommend the following -
Machete.

Paranorman

A most violent year.

Not a happy ending in sight, it's gritty & a bit coarse, but I really liked it. The setting, early 80's New York; is just excellent.

+1 Captain Fantastic, some great acting and leaves more engrossing questions than it answers. A funny, sad, enraging and captivating ride of mundane to sublime fancy. Wholly original.

Edit : ^ A Most Violent Year was also great. Excellent acting, Tom Hardy put me in mind of a younger De Niro. Not saying too much as spoilers are easily stumbled upon.

Something I didn't expect to enjoy too much was 'Florence Foster Jenkins'. Sad, comical and true. An 'against all odds' biopic drama superbly played by Streep. She really is amazingly funny and touching in this role.

My last recommendation is 'Robot & Frank'. Grumpy old guy with a house/care robot. Brilliant stuff. Novel, unsentimental and well-played. This definitely fits 'hidden gem' IMO.

A Most Violent Year

Does Tom Hardy gruffly mumble his way through?

I am now considering high rise (fails on the comedy front)

I watched 'All is Lost' on Film 4 the other night - quite gripping and wanted to give the guy a hug towards the end.

He's not in the cast as far as I remember, the male lead's Oscar Isaac. Jessica Chastain is excellent too.

The Skeleton Twins is good if you want something small-scale and indie. It's funny but there's not much action. Just turned up on Netflix.

As recommended on page one - Nice Guys is a great film and fits your remit OP. Robot and Frank is a corker of a film and also has Liv Tyler in it which is always a bonus.

A hidden Gem, that is so hidden I have not been able to see it for years.

Damn! Beat me to it. Fantastic and little-known film, superb editing, and very funny. Anyone remember the series of TV adverts with Gryff Rhys Jones in, using similar edited in bits of classic movies?

IF

filmed at my alma mater.

Without giving too much away, the closing scenes were welcomed most enthusiastically when "If" was the film of choice for end of year English class.

just watched Book of Life with my kids
Absolutely fantastic and I generally hate animated films

Edge of tomorrow was an unexpected hit for me especially as it had Tom Cruise in it. More Collateral than MI

I've just watched this on Sky Movies so it must be out soon on iTunes/DVD..

I know it's got Nic Cage in it, but it's a very good film IMO, huge twist at the end too..

Just watched the end sequence on you tube, "If" film, the granny with the machine gun and the nurse throwing hand grenades, and as for the headmaster, thankfully its all fiction.

a true classic.

Comedy and action as per the brief.

War Dogs. *Top entertainment*
Premium Rush *bike related content but silly fun*
Don't Breath
Hush
Blue Ruin
Hell or High Water *best script*
Deepwater Horizon - *true life disaster movie that's breath taking.*
The Devil's Double
Unthinkable
The Invitation
Under The Shadow

Get more tricky/rewarding as the list moves down. Not necessarily hidden but all under hyped.

All true! I misremembered. Oscar Isaac stole it. Tom Hardy played the role I was thinking of in 'The Drop'. Again, gangland thriller, very low key and broody. Great little film.

Doesn't meet either of your criteria for action or comedy, but definitely flew under the radar (for me at least). Firstly The Big Short - on Netflix and got Steve Carroll, Ryan gosling, brad pit and Christian bale in it (how it flew under the radar I'll never know - might just be me), a true story of the few economics and rouge traders who predicted the economic crash in 2008 - not normally a bale fan but he''s very good in it. Secondly - Tracks, film based on the true story of a young girl traveling across the Australian desert with 4 camels and a dog on the 70's. Not a great deal happens and it's s bit of a coming of age / against all adversity biopic, but it's brilliant and well worth checking out

I liked The Voices with Ryan Reynolds.
Not the greatest film but I'd never heard of it before I watched it t'other week.

I don't think The Big Short flew under the radar:

"The film was a financial and critical success, grossing $133 million against a $28 million budget, and receiving positive reviews. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Bale, and Best Adapted Screenplay, winning the last"

Good film.

Why would anyone bother to read the OP? Just blurt out the name of a film.
