Sounds like it may be a cam cover gasket leak, might need a new spark plug if its got cooked in oil,
Plus HT lead.
Probably a daft question, but are the HT leads the same apart from the length? Ie; could I perform my test again with say the lead from cylinder 1 on cylinder 4?
only if you swap the lead to the coil pack socket for cylinder 4 , firing order is 1342 .
Well I think I'm on to something. Took it out for a nice relaxing drive through the rush-hour traffic as you do when you suspect there's a serious problem with your car... It's like a new motor! Well, not new but a hell of a lot better than it was. I could keep up with traffic, go up slight inclines and everything! Still a bit put-put-put sounding, but the clanking noise has gone. and the cat wasn't glowing red when I got home.
I've ordered new plugs/leads/pack. I'll clean the plugholes out with carb-cleaner before I take the old ones out. Then start hunting for oil leaks. I can live with the noisy cat until MOT time.
Once you have the VCDS lead then the software is basically free. I've had free updates now for a decade or more.
If your exhaust is loose it's easy to fix back up with a strap. Don't leave it, it might break something else that's not designed to support the load.

Will do, thanks. So my theory is oil leak into well - no spark - unburnt fuel thrashing CC, - CC melts off its brackets.
Just putting this down in case somebody has similar issues in the future.

That cable etc would be great if it's still ok? If the software is free then perhaps the cable only would suffice? I'll double-check that but in the meantime, this is the socket that the cable needs to go into.
