Actually the term [i]"nasty party"[/i] to describe the Tories, was first given media prominence in 2002 by the then chairman of the Conservative Party, Theresa May. She used the term in her keynote speech to the Conservative Party Conference as she outlined why the Tories needed to change.
The comment caused a great deal of controversy within the Tory Party at the time, with some calling for her resignation. Still, just blame "Labour rhetoric about the Tories" for all of that.
