Is there a difference in the way the fees will have to be paid back as opposed to the way grants are?

yes the grant was free and was not paid back. Now you invest [27K +]in yourself safe in the knowledge that 50% of your peers have degrees and less than 50% of jobs are graduate calibre and homes cost 4 x the average salary.
Only way my kids are going is if a grandparent dies about the right time and leaves enough. Dave and Gideons kids might just be going whatever happens

Those who say there is no money available are wrong. There is plenty of money available, it's just kept by the large corporations and the nouveau rich, non of whom pay anywhere near the percentage of tax we pay. This government are the worst I can remember in my lifetime. A bunch of rich idiots looking after their toff friends. The scrapping of the Vodaphone tax bill, Barclays only paying 2.5% tax on profits of several billion, even footballers setting up companies to avoid paying a percentage of their taxes. Tax is for us poor hard working sods to pay not the rich.

If it's just about money, about balancing the books, how come this:

http://taxjustice.blogspot.com/2008/02/tescos-tax-tricks.html

But aren't Tesco here making use of a tax structure which is in no way the 'fault' of the Coalition? I also *think* there are plans in place to restructure the coroprate tax system, but don't know why I think that...

I hadn't known grants were free. Have just been reading. I was getting them confused with student loans. Regardless, neither the % with degrees, the % of graduate jobs or house prices are anything to do with the Coalition.

There is plenty of money available, it's just kept by the large corporations and the nouveau rich, non of whom pay anywhere near the percentage of tax we pay. This government are the worst I can remember in my lifetime. A bunch of rich idiots looking after their toff friends.

But all of whom (corporations and individuals) are paying their tax as required under a tax regime set up by the last (Labour) government. A bit rich blaming the Coalition for this...

Didn't you know? It's all Thatcher's fault, unless it's teheviltoryscum coalition's fault. Nothing happened in between, nothing at all.......Oh no. Nothing whatsoever.

Thirdly, you could get 2 million people back to work, so that they are all paying taxes ........ instead of pushing unemployment up even higher.

Fourthly, you could force employers to pay a living wage so that the government isn't forced to subsidise them through the benefits system.

"How are you going to do the first one with a expandeible workforce due to EU membership who will be attracted by your second idea?"

Posted 1 hour ago

The job of the British government is to provide the conditions for decent jobs which pay decent wages.......for British workers.

It is not the responsibility of the British government to solve Lithuania's or Poland's unemployment problems .......that's their problem.

The EU can go and **** themselves as far as I'm concerned - they have no moral right to tell a sovereign nation how to conduct their affairs.

And I have to say, of all the excuses I have ever heard for not paying a decent living wage, the suggestion that it will attract foreign workers has to be the most pisspoor.

Are you seriously going to tell British workers that they have to be kept deliberately poor, lest foreigners are attracted ? Yeah right, it's for there own good really. Funnily enough though, it's the complete opposite for bankers and the super-rich ....... they need to be even wealthier and have huge pay rises otherwise they will bugger-off to another country. How very convenient.......if you're a wealthy Tory banker. ffs

And before you start whingeing "but the economy can't afford to pay all workers a living wage" I'll remind you that Britain is the 5th wealthiest nation on earth. If those responsible can't get their act together so that all workers get a living wage, then they, or the system, is incompetent, and should be replaced.

No one in full-time employment in Britain should need to have their wages topped up by the taxpayers through the benefit system. Unless of course there are exceptional circumstances.

I despised NuLav - and I depise the present bunch of jokers every bit asmuch, Andrew Lansley especially so. The NHS may be far from perfect, but his ill-thought-out reforms manage to threaten what it can do well.

almost everything you post flash is just to blame labour ๐Ÿ™„
DO you think the Tories have an idelogical belief in a small state..go on answer a direct question [without reference to labour]it is an easy one to wean you on to saying something about the tories rather than about labour ๐Ÿ˜‰

"But all of whom (corporations and individuals) are paying their tax as required under a tax regime set up by the last (Labour) government. A bit rich blaming the Coalition for this..."

I can blame who I like - although I might be wrong ๐Ÿ˜‰

I don't have the article to hand but the 6 BILLION Vodaphone tax write off came after a meeting betweem some (current) government bod and the head of Vodaphone.
I don't think Labour would be much better but people who say there is no money are completely wrong. And the coalition say "there is no money so we have to tax everyone more". Except of course our richest friends and cronies who we will tax less.

in 1992 when the scum was in power the average wait for a hernia operation was two years and 8 months. in 2005 i waited 8 weeks from being diagnosed to actually having my operation done. I REST MY CASE!

What was the waiting time in the late 1970s?

Government spending has gone UP!

do you not get it?

we are spending more than we are taking in tax

if we borrow money to make up the difference, we have to pay interest on it - we are borrowing even more money to pay interest on the loans.

Do you understand?

This is the mess that labour left - there is no money the cupboard is bare!

Either, we pay more tax, or we spend less - its one or the other!

Can somebody post a link to a decent explanation of this? I want to see actual evidence and not Tory proselytising/scare mongering, which has on the large been regurgitated by the popular press. I regularly read the papers, I watch the news, and I still havent seen any evidence that the cuts have to be so sudden and far reaching.

I do recall reading that Gordon Brown's government, along with the bank of England projected a 14 year turnaround and spending plan that would not have seen cuts of this nature, and would have allowed spending, particularly the revamping and rebuilding of schools, to continue as it has been. It described a domestic economic recovery from global recession that, pre-election, the tories stated was un-achievable. So far, the tories have benefitted from a recovery that has matched these projections virtually point for point (though it has slowed of late).

As a Police Officer I am in a public sector 'profession' that is very soon to be hit the hardest by cuts, changes in pension entitlement etc. I have over 100 colleagues with over 30 years experience apiece, and mostly under the age of 55 years, who by June will be 'sacked' on efficiency grounds - losing 3000 years of policing experience in one fell swoop is considered efficient?.

There is a 3 year pay freeze, an end to bonuses, a projected increase to 13% pension contributions, a 27 year cap on service meaning that despite having some of the highest pension contributions of any profession, effictively my pension may be halved on retirement. Don't believe the hype that the Police pension scheme was so much better than everyone elses (as is often portrayed) it isn't.

Yes, the Tories have gone too far, and they're doing it far too quickly

the fact is that this tory scum do not care about the police nhs or education or public transport for the simple reason that they have private healthcare private education never use public transport and all live in very low crime areas. THEY DO NOT LIVE IN OUR WORLD AND NEVER WILL AND UNTIL POLITICIANS OF ALL PARTIES USE THE SAME SERVICES AS THE REST OF US NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE!

Tell that to the Camerons who used the same NHS as you and I when their handicapped son was terminally ill.

Tell that to the Cameron's

With respect, CFH, if Cameron is so enamoured with the NHS, he is going to have to do a better - much better - job of explaining why it has to be [s]sold off to Serco[/s] opened up to competition. Especially when it comes to specialised services (Paediatric stuff especially).

There is nothing wrong with the Tory as that's the way they govern, so please show your appreciation by bowing or being stepped on. You had your chance it's others' now.

Put it this way New Labour had their chance to bugger up the country so it's only fair for the next govt to bugger up now. Why keep complaining when you know absolutely well it is unfair not to let other have their go. So please join the queue to bugger up the country ... you turn will come next.

As for the rest that refuse to cut their umbilical cord attach to the constant benefit feeds, why should other feed them when they are fit and healthy?

The system needs changing and to start from basic again so ...

"Let us be frank about it: most of our people have never had it so good".

p/s: to OP ... no they have not gone far enough. Bunch of maggots ...
