In that picture I see the satchel, the towel, the thumb, some tea, the guide aka a Kindle, and Ed the computer spewing out ticker tape - but what's the red thing?

Isn't it the thing Ford uses to see if there is a space craft around to get a lift off. Can't remember the name but think it was described as the space equivalent of sticking out your thumb

That's the Thumb, and it's in the picture (the thing that looks like a can of deodorant).

I'm not sure what that red thing is either. Improbability drive?
