An impromptu ride back tomorrow...
A30- Winchester and A272 - Petersfield heading west seem the obv route but how are these roads for cycling?
Not good. From winch onwards stick to the small roads to the south of the 272, through all the Meons. If on an mtb you can take the Clarendon way from Sailsbury then the South Downs Way from winch. The former might be walkers only, not sure
Cheers.. I had a sneaky suspicion they might not be great...I will be on a road bike .
Definitely not the A272! It's a shame as that road cuts through some gorgeous countryside.
It is bad enough crossing the A272. It is a major arterial road despite only being single carriageway and well used by commercial vehicles and business drivers. Going through the Meons is nicer. Give the A32 a miss while you are at it.
Agree. A272 is one of my favourites to drive. Wide and fast. Horrible on a bike
Can route around the meon valley easily on nice roads.
It's a shame that the road isn't cycle-friendly, would make a lovely tour. I've actually got a book on the A272, written by a Dutchman no less! Really interesting with nice pics. 8)
This is my normal route in that direction (well, between Petersfield and where it leaves the A27 between Romsey and Sherfield English; I normally stay due west at that point): http://goo.gl/maps/nwDiX
Roads down there in Wiltshire and Hamshire are SO busy, why not treat yourself to a weekend riding up here in Ribble valley and Bowland where the only traffic is the odd tractor or Land Rover?
A272 IS a favourite for motorcyclists as it`s nice and twisty. So not the best cycling road
On the plus side, there's some stellar riding along the lanes around the A272 and you'll be able to piece together something. I'd second the Meon Valley route but you could also stay north of the road (Froxfield-Privett-Alresford) easily enough.
I would take the Alresford road out of Winch, over the bridge and to the tech centre/Percy Hobbs (what was) roundabout. Onto A272 for a few miles until you see a junction on the right peeling off, its at the bottom of the first long hill down. Take that and head all the way to Warnford. At the watercress beds/A32 in Warnford, turn left along A32 until West Meon, and then take the East Meon road which will be on the right in the middle of the village. Take this through East Meon until you join A272 again in Langrish. Finish on 272 into Petersfield.

Agreed Froxy/privvy/Arles are part of one of my many routes and whilst single lanes are very very quiet, hack through some most beautiful countryside but they are not a quick route if you need to get back to P'field, more a casual hack if you get my drift.
If you did do it though, you could do the above, turn down into East Meon and head towards Butser Hill then head back up to P'field.. Of stay North and head to Steep (named for a reason and stunning)
Probs with the 272 is its full of trucks and fast cars, it's smooth, you can hack it, but being overtaken by 40 toners isn't pleasant at the best of times.
Lanes most deffo the safest, though not quickest, route.
Enjoy my County, don't ruin it ๐
Personally, I'd stay north from Winchester, go under the M3/a34 roundabout on bike route then via lanes to Arlesford, Ropley, cut over to West Tisted then past Basing Park to Froxfield then nice sweeping descent down Stoner back into Petersfield. That'll be my commuting route at some point in the next few months when I start my new role in Winchester.
I love the A272 for driving so that in its self as a reason not to cycle it! I live just off Belmore lane to the south of the route above. I'm a nervous road cyclist as it is but the roads around here scare the jobby out of me.
After studying the route above I think its the best way if you're on a road bike. The outstanding way would be take the MTB over the south downs way.
