[#420968]

I've had this planned for a while but this morning i've realised its 4 weeks ago and i haven't started training.

I'm pretty bike fit and do occaisionally run for 30 - 45 mins but that's about it.

The suggested programme on the site runs for 12 weeks running up to 5 hours a week which i obviously won't have time to do.I'm not planning on winning it so if i try to get up to running for about 2hrs over the next 3 weeks or so should i be ok??

You'll be fine. First time i ever did a half the longest i'd run for was 30 minutes on the gym treadmill and i managed to finish in 1h29m something.

NB I later found out that this approach didn't work so well for full marathons...

finbar was clearly not slowed down by his enormous manhood.

Most normal people would struggle to get ready in time. You run the risk of injury IMO.

I agree with donald.
You run the risk of injury which could take weeks/months to shift.

Foolhardy I reckon.

well i'll see how i go over the next couple of weeks, i'll try to get 3 runs in up to 45mins in wk1, then 3 x 1hr ones wk2, 3 x 1.5 hrs wk3,then down to 45mins wk4.

I think if you can run for 45 minutes already then you are in a position where with some dedication over the next month, the half is possible. I would think you need to be 100% committed and have a diet/training regime in place from today onwards focussed on being fit enough. If you try and run the half otherwise you're probably going to get an injury with the shock of at the very least doubling your current max run.

I'm doing the Bournemouth 1/2 in 2 weeks time, I am regularly running 6-8 miles and enjoying it...I also ran the course a couple of weeks ago so know I can do the distance, but 13 miles running is a long way and I'd much rather do it on a bike!!

Injury is the biggest issue, I have hurt myself running much more than I have on the bike (cue a big off at the weekend!)

If you don't regularly do a sport which involves running then don't do it you'll injure yourself. Guy at work who's a serious Rugby player and trains regularly has run a couple of half marathons with minumal preparation and got round although he suffered badly towards the end

As long as you don't let your ego get the better of you and try to race then you should be okay.
1 mile run
1/2 mile walk
1 mile run
1/2 mile walk so on so on.

Or even better find a good looking bird with a great behind and follow her round (at a discreet distance of course)will keep your mind of the pain ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I would not bother - you will hurt yourself. There are no downhills, no skidding or bunny hopping and you cant change into granny when it gets hard.

Go out on your bike instead, that will be much more fun.

you'll be fine, you can get a lot of training in in four weeks. start of small, half an hour 4 times a week, for the first week, then 40 mins 4 times a week, then 50 mins four time a week then bring it back down to two or three 20 minute easy runs the final week and you'll be fine...

Seconed time I trained for 3 months and was only 20 mins faster

Slight hijack!

I've been running for a few weeks now, started the run/walk/run/walk thing in the beginning and I can now run a couple of miles but getting tightness/soreness behind my right knee in the tendons. Anybody know if this is related to tight hamstrings?

Roach if it's on the outside of you knee where the indent is by your kneecap, have a look on google for Iliotibial Band Syndrome.

As for only 4 weeks to go, unless you;ve done oen before i reckon you're doomed.

I've been training for 2 months now for one I'm running on th 18th April (having this week off due to a cold) but I think that'll be a struggle after 3 months training.

I can easily run 10k in around 50 minutes, but it's that extra 10k I've gotta add on the end, I personally think it;s more of a boredom thing than aything else.

It's right at the back. Seems to be those large tendons running behind the knee.

Dear gods man!

I'm doing a 10k in two weeks and I started training for it ages ago. I still can't get my time below 52 minutes for it yet and I only really have a single race length practice to try, then it's a single half length practice and resting before the race.

4 weeks is not really long enough if you are not already running. Not for a half marathon.

Dammit. I thought I was bad at leaving things to the last minute.

Which half marathon by the way? I'd be tempted to give it a try if I can find the right music to listen to.

I agree with comments about running an injuries. I get more injuries running than anything else. Running really shows up how fragile some bits of us are and there is nowhere to hide with running, aside from your shoes there is no real equipment you can play with to make a difference. I am lazy about stretching post riding my bike but always make a real effort to sort our post run stretches and cool down. Also, I know now to stop running if I get an injury, the last time I ran through and ended up with no running for 4 weeks and sports physio bills to pay.

Having said all that, running is great fun and I really enjoy it so the 4 weeks of training shouldn't be too bad. Nike+ is your friend !

Just make sure you book a 6 month course of physio in advance (-;

So, you'd only run for half an hour on a treadmill in a gym, then you ran a 13 mile race in 1hr 29mins...averaging under 7 minutes a mie...fair dues...but I don't believe you.

You should be able to get round one way or another but you can expect to be wrecked at the end.

You'll only get injuries if you plough on and don't listen to your body. If stuff starts to feel fragile then pull out.

Start now!

Give up the bike and run Forest Run!

Take it easy-don't give care about speed just put the distance and time.

If you can run 15 miles now without issues then go for 20 by 4 weeks as you increase 10% on the day.

Good thing you're ok for 30-40 mins now.

If you use the treadmil-put the climb on too. Otherwise you'll e jumping up and down.

Train outside and go for it!

i wouldn't do anything in week 4 - try to get to 10miles half way week3 as that will see you thru then a couple of short runs and rest

T'is mighty impressive if you managed 1 hr 29' on that training regime. Did you stop to puke at all? ๐Ÿ˜‰ chapeau! that's 6'47" mile pacing. 13 of those buggers would put my breakfast on the pavement

Illiotibial band syndrome is at the side of the knee not the back.

Uhuh. Maybe I'll have to after this lunchtime's fun run. It started raining as I left the office, pissed down for the whole 10k and stopped just after I got back. Literally just after I got back.

I'm not sure if my iPod still works properly and my running kit weighed a tonne when I took it off. Thanks to the 25mph headwind for the last 4k I was also shivering and couldn't feel my fingers.

Still got a better than average time though (0:54:36), but need to try and take about 5 minutes off if I want to get anywhere near my self-imposed target time.

I love this running business.

Don't mean to be horrible, but you're not really approaching anything near respectability until you're running 10k in under 50 mins. 8min miles is running, anything more is jogging.

No, that's what I keep telling myself DD. I look at my times after I get back and keep getting angry with myself about it.

A lot of it is just me getting to a comfortable pace and not pushing myself past it. When I used to run with a GPS I could at least look at the speed and pace and make sure that the two were on track with what I wanted. I might try that for the race actually.

I would also like to point out that I have _never_ been able to run this far in my life, so doing 10k three times a week is quite an acheivement for me.

Is anyone else on Nikeplus.com ? I could put up a challenge for STW posters.

I always use Nike+ to record every run and use the website to enter challenges and set training goals.

Same sort of thing I think. Says I have run 62 miles this month so far.
