seems like he should have spent time testing the bike instead of titting around racing a car up a hill climb in kent for the camera

Throttle lag from a turbo on a bike, on some hairpin bends

What could possibly go wrong?

Bonkers! 😯

What the hell would he have been able to do if the bike had worked properly!
Hope he goes back next year

terrahawk - Member
He should have given you a call, eh? ?

If he had done, the bike would have been mapped properly, run properly and made full power right up to 4300m / 59.3 kPa.........

The problem wasn't anything to do with mapping as it turned out.

Good programme. Enjoyed that.

Always an excuse to watch Ari Vatanen's Pike's Peak run.

Could he not just have put it upstairs in his home made altitude room.. on rollers maybe?

Anyway terrahawk, last week you were his 'friend' and this week he has a new 'BEST friend'...

life is so fickle!

If the bike had been dyno'd in the Uk then surely it would have shown up as running lean on full boost?
So if your injector duration is maxxxed out then its either up the fuel rail pressure, or fit bigger injectors. Although in this case some valve on the fuel system was causing the motor to run lean

Not a biker but know enough about car turbo systems and they are complex things , and just bolting on a turbo probably made the thing slower in the end.

Im all for some shed brewed adventures, but why waste time and effort in going 10,000miles and months of work when a morning at a tuner would have at least identified a fixable fault

Considering he won his class, it was hardly a waste of time.
Sure it is clear it could have gone a whole lot quicker and maybe won it, but its hardly a massive loss considering he could probably go back next year and win it.

+1.

Not perfect but as he would say himself 'job done'. Most folk go to their first race with no idea of the course and come nowhere near winning so the scope for a future win is looking great.

How mad was that crash when the bike appeared from nowhere?!

Hadn't a sensor failed or something like that?

Don't care about sensor or fuelling, not really a motorbike person either but by God, that exhaust was an absolute work of art!

Oh Christ yes, that exhaust was lovely.

Did anyone else get looked at with a mixture of pity and contempt as they openly drooled over that exhaust pipe, and pointing out that it was indeed a work of art?

As he said himself, that was the best thing he had ever done on a bike.
You could see he was proper chuffed. I for one felt well happy for him.
Probably best the bike wasn't running at full throttle on a new course (for him).
Im sure if he can remember 37 miles of TT course, then it shouldn't take him long to learn the 12 miles of that hill.
I reckon he will be back next year to claim it !

I liked that one last night and I'm certainly not a biker.
But I think it's GM's general enthusiasm for just about everything, coupled with the whole preparation, anticipation thing, it's not bad telly...

Really made me want to visit Colorado too...

I'd imagine that not having full throttle on that monster, while being frustratingly slow for Guy, would be fast enough to scare the living bejesus out of the rest of us mere mortals. On a straight road. Throw in those terrifying switchbacks with the enormous drops and I'd probably be whimpering like a little girl

Great bit of TV, I enjoyed it. Pleasingly, Mrs Lunge has just announced that Guy is her new "weird crush" and so is also more than happy to watch it. It's his eyes and childish enthusiasm apparently.

I actually thought the exhaust work was not that great, nice, but not the best. I used to work for Galmer Eng. and we made most of the F1 exhaust systems back in the early 90's.

They were even better. Every day at work I would drool over proper works of art with phasing as well as diameter and space issues to contend with.

I also met Al Unser Jr. We did all the pipework for the engines and fitted them to the cars (Stuck a Chevy rocker cover on an Ilmore engine for the win as the yanks couldn't make a proper race engine)

But it was a great program. I liked the tank tape amendments they made to the hire van signage 🙂

Great bit of TV, but there were only three others in his class, so he didn't have much competition............
