whereas Americanists seem to think they should have them just because they can.

SOME feel that way. I have friends who live miles from the nearest neighbours on ranches and frequently (5-6 times a year) have armed robbers come onto their property to steal livestock or machinery. The only way to avoid losing their property or maybe their life is to go outside and fire a few shots into the air. Of course, they could have a blank firing gun but that wouldn't save them if the robbers decided to come closer.

Now, the bloke I spoke to in Vegas who was buying a gun "for between the house and the car" (so about 20 feet) didn't need a gun. The existing 9mm pistols he kept in his house and his car seemed to be overkill already.

And Nelson's hailed as a hero for creating this legacy...Awesome work.

I assume you're referring to Nelson Mandela. Not sure why you've chosen to involve him in this.

The poor man, he's not got a leg to stand on!

Is that something you'd say directly to an amputee? Classy.

And what's worse, it was done on page 1. Not sure what the bigger sin was tbh.

I thought you were out?

Sweeping generalisations and news speculations? This thread is going to hell in a handcart.

It's the news speculations I'm out of, I'm well up for the sweeping generalisations. Well, I was, I but I'm probably done now. But you're probably right.

This place is so ****y sometimes

It's not so much the venue, as the clientele it attracts.

Very sad news, whatever the circumstances .
I left South Africa 11 years ago . I did not want to live a life where one needed a gun for self defence. I never bothered to own a 9mm pistol until the day my son was born.
One makes these decisions based on the fact that you could save your or your family's lives, but on the other hand you might take another persons life in the process.
A year after my son was born we moved here.
I still miss and love South Africa, but I love living in England now. A good friend of mine ( who is also a STWer ) lost his sister to robbers shooting her at point blank range. My brother in law and his wife have been car jacked several times. He has been held up at the factory that he owns many times ( Fridays is pay day in cash to workers) .
Owning a gun in SA - damned if you do, damned if you don't.

PS Nelson Mandela is a legend, wonderful human being.

Too much of this thread is In very poor taste.

This. Its a shame as Oscar is a high profile athlete that has done a lot for sport, particularly for representation sports with disability. To many he's a hard working hero of our era who has overcome much to be the best in the world at what he does..

Despite the fact he has poor form for temper tantrums, nothings been proven yet, and jokes about the circumstances and his disability are very unwelcome when we should be thinking of the effect on him and his girlfriends families with this very tragic loss, accidental or otherwise.

That has a whiff of urban myth about it.

It's not 1st hand knowledge so you could be right, but it's from a mate so I believe it to be true. Either way you it's not the sort of "myth" i'd personally like to field-test.

He had other tales, as you would expect, and not all were bad. The over-riding conclusion I came away with after hearing him speak is that it's no place for anyone who values their safety or well-being.

Your generalisation about blacks and whites are about as broad and urban myth-like as i've seen in a while.

Police spokesman has said the police were surprised about the reporting of it as a mistake, and will request no bail...

very sad, whatever the reason behind it.

It was from personal experience, but, yes, it was a very broad generalisation.

To be honest, I went off to lunch and expected this to be closed by the time I got back...

Are we allowed to make jokes about the two police women shot by Dale Creegan?

Or is it only South African models that are fair game?

Having been to SA, and knowing others who live in SA, and others who've moved from SA, the country has problems, absolutely, but a lot of the 'going to hell in a handcart' stories come from bitter whites who are having a hard time adjusting to the fact that they can no longer boss around the black majority purely because of the colours of their respective skins.

IME, and as a very broad generalisation, the 'blacks' were friendly and welcoming, the 'whites' were diffident and rude. It's an odd country, and I'm not sure I liked it

I agree totally with this. Stopped at plenty of red lights and didn't die, get raped or mugged, neither did my girlfriend. Went to a few places where segregation was still evident and some of the white people were pretty nasty about it.

For me you can crack on with either. Being that I think it is better to make light of the utterly depressing thing called being a human than be offended by stuff people say.

Creegan had a glass eye so that would be my starting point
