I am looking for a simple way to get rid of some stuff that is taking up space. I can't be bothered with e-bay and the Paypal tax - a car boot sale is what I really need but I haven't got a car 🙂 I was wondering if Gumtree might meet my needs - or is it a pain ?
not a pain at all just do the ads and leave them on ,if stuff is any use it'll eventually all go and so much better than all the faff posting etc as it tends to attract locals who can view the item before buying so no arguments either. A car boot may be quicker but you won't make nearly as much as people tend to pay low prices unless you've something really special IME.

I use it, but always make terms very clear and never respond to those that don't follow them. Collection only, asking price is asking price, that sort of thing. Got fed up of mental requests including offering to swap an item of furniture I was selling for some fishing gear and a really good torch 😐

Freecycle if what your trying to shift turns out to be worthless tat.
Don't forget the charity option as well, furniture seems particularly in demand round here.

I've sold a few household electrical items on there with no problems but when I tried to sell a cheap car on there my advert seemed to attract every idiot going 😆
It was only £300 but I lost count of the people that offered me £100 for it or wanted to swap it for their Xbox etc!

Nope, not a dodgy area at all. You've honestly never had people ask you to deliver something that clearly states collection only or attempt to haggle even though you've stipulated it's a fixed price? If so, I would say you're bloody lucky. I'd like to know how fishing tackle and torches are an indicator as to the how dodgy an area is? What an odd thing to say.

What's the odds on this? Two of us who attract idiots and live in dodgy areas!
1. Uncheck the show location on map,
2. Add a note about not responding to illiterate texts; and
3. Add a note about not discussing the price until you are face to face.
Other than that it's OK ish
I'd go with car boot. At least they don't know where you live and aren't checking out your house 😉 . Though I'd add that more as a concern about Freecycle really. Had some well shifty types turn up to pick up stuff I was chucking out and wasn't comfortable with them being there.
Other option - tip.
I can never be bothered these days with the faff getting ride of stuff of little value. I might donate to a relative or a charity I know some are involved with, but otherwise I just take to the tip or chuck it in the loft.

It is only free if your item sells straight away. They charge write a lot for relisting.
I use eBay a lot. It's great. It cost 14% with all the fees. But I still have 86% of something I wouldn't have otherwise. I have sold £1000's of stuff over the years.

I've generally sold stuff eventually on there but you do tend to get strange robot replies which appear to be the opening gambit in a scam.
