Dorking's no better than Guildford for riding, you're at the other end of the Surrey Hills/further along the North Downs, but you don't have the Gorrick stuff. I'd sooner stay further west.

around Abinger Hammer, Shere perhaps? Basically between Guildford and Dorking.
And you'll be ideally positioned for the annual Teddy Bears picnic. ๐Ÿ™‚

I spent a happy couple of years in Guildford, then Dorking, currently in Farnham.

Rented a house in Park Barn, and despite it's reputation, never had a slightest bit of bother, neighbours all very friendly, never had any cars broken into etc. As others have said, traffic can be bad at times, I was nearly always on 2 wheels, either with or without an engine, so wasn't a problem.

Dorking is a lovely spot, fantastic for the North Downs, but not great if you enjoy night life, as everywhere shuts pretty early. We actually saw more trouble in Dorking than Guildford, but we were right next to a bit of a rough pub. Head for the Hills and CycleWorks have both been great to me over the years - being right opposite HftH last year was awesome ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers, Rich

I'm going to Guildford on Saturday evening. Any good bars/clubs?

Yes, plenty, what are you looking for?

Classy(ish) with a good view ๐Ÿ˜‰

There's a fair few places in town, nothing really 'clubby' as far as i know apart from Harpers which is by all accounts a bit of a dive (but I've never been in so don't quote me). Ha Ha Bar, Five and Lime, many places on the bridges over the Wey from 'chain pubs' to smaller bars.

If you are slightly more mature / less dancey, there's a relatively new place down at the bottom end of the town - a 'piano bar' called the Tickled Ivory with live music. No under 21's, smart casual dress. was in there last weekend for my 40th and seemed to have quite a nice atmosphere, and tonnes of talent including one girl in a white dress that I'm convinced was painted on!

Used to live in Bellfields (Lime Grove)

I live in Lime Grove. I trust you weren't one of the students who thought it was great fun to bang on my front door at 3 in the morning and run away, or use my side door as a toilet, or throw your empty beercans in my garden.

Nah - not me. We were "sensible" postgrads.

Yes I quite like Tickled Ivory, most places are pretty nasty though, it's not a very good night out IMO.

freeridenick I didn't say there wasn't riding closer to Dorking, you're a lot closer to Leith, Ranmore, Box Hill etc, but Leith's over rated, you can just start from Winterfold, which you're nearer, and you've got the stuff towards Caesars camp/Swinley/Tunnel Hill far more easily accessible.

Each to their own and that.
