[#8359637]

Following Tracey's suggestion on another thread:

Orange alpine 5(29er) In blue. Large.
Pro2 evo on lb 30mm rims, pillar aero spokes front and rear.
minion 2.5 dhf exo and hr 2.35 exo.
X0 2x10 and bash on rf cranks and bb(so probably full of water)
Xt cassette.
Nano x pedals.
Hope tech 3 e4 brakes
Reverb
820mm carbon bars (because i don't ride in trees*)
Kore stem
Belair saddle
Float x rear
Flat 36 150s front.

I have no idea what it weighs so I'm going to guess 26lb without the reverb.

I've no photos either so here is one from the internet. It meets the standards of accuracy required for weight related thread is about the right colour and likely similar weight, though less filing cabinets were harmed in the production of this bike.

*its been broadly suggested by friends that the "in trees" bit of this statement is untrue.

that is just ridiculous,

how can anyone possibly make an accurate estimate without knowing the quantity and brand of sealant you are using ๐Ÿ™„

just weigh it on the bathroom scales and stop wasting everyones time.

or you can weigh yourself, then weigh yourself with the bike. that's the most accurate way.

Weigh yourself standing on some bathroom scales, then weigh yourself again holding the bike.

Deduct your weight from the last figure, bingo.

Ahhhh, explains why people weigh without pedals. I'd rip my shins to shreds trying to get on my scales with the bike otherwise.

32lbs, I'm still of the opinion all bikes secretly weigh 32lbs, in this case it sounds about right.

Have you considered plastic pedals and a plastic seat? Easy way to drop 5-6lbs.

I bought a lightweight, beautifully sculptured expensive frame from a boutique American brand which went bust and was subsequently bought by a bargain basement, price slashing Yorkshire outfit.Imagine my disgust when I stood on my bathroom scales and realised that my once gorgeous frame had not only gone up in weight overnight but was now considered fugly by the STW bike snobs ๐Ÿ™

How many psi in the shock? They've got to add up a bit I reckon.

Once you have an answer you can weigh the bike, then weigh yourself holding the bike and deduct one from the other. Then apply the mattyfez method above to determine the weight of the bike.

Well I know what it doesn't weigh, & that's 26lb's.

Well I've shone a laser(pointer) past it, measured the deflection of the beam (with a laser measure obviously) and done the maths to work out its mass (also if it was magnetic, turns out thats bs)then used the calculated mass and known value of g to calculate its weight.

Turns out my estimate was 26lb over!

So on the basis my very acurate method turns out to be quite limited by inaccurate equipment I'll ride to work on the bike in question on Friday, (this will be good for seeing me loose any weight the bike "gains" beyond 26lb) and weigh it on our scales, (they can count bolts so should be ok with a bike. I assume they can count to 1).

A free bag of haribo to who ever gets closest to what the scales say.

Edit: If i weigh it will enjoy riding it less?* If so might not do this.

*I'm not sure I can ride it less.

32lb 7oz

Our bathroom scales can also determine body mass so if I feed in the wheel and frame size will it tell my how much weight it needs to loose.
I usually get weighed in the morning as I find I always weigh less at that time. Is this the best time to weigh the bike.

I'm sure that one of our bikes must weigh about 29lb which is probably the average of what they weigh.

I weighed my bike then stripped it down to its components parts, weighed them individually on a digital scales, noted them all down on a spreadsheet, rebuilt the bike and compared the individual weights to the overall bike weight.

Simple and effective

see, i couldnt do that. our bathroom scales are in the ensuite, which would mean carrying the bike through the house and up the stairs, and i doubt it would get round the bend in the stairs. and even then, the ensuite is too small to fit a bike in it, so i'd have to leave half the bike outside the door and just weigh one end at a time.

Or, pick your bike up, and get someone to listen to the 'hoomph!' noise you make. Now, carry a load of bricks to your bathroom, and keep adding bricks to an Ikea bag till it requires the same amount of 'hoomph!' to lift. Then weigh all the bricks, one at a time, on your bathroom scales. Add up the individual weights and bingo!

I could just put it in the village pond and measure how much the water rises?

What you really need to do is pay Elon Musk a large wad, take your bike into space, and measure its mass in a vacuum.

It's the only way to be reasonably sure.

But no vacuum is truly perfect, not even in interstellar space, where there are still a few hydrogen atoms per cubic meter.

You should use a calorimitor to calculate the mass accurately.

I could just put it in the village pond and measure how much the water rises?

because a carbon bike with large volume sealed tubes will displace far more water than a steel frame with weld pressure relief holes in all the tubes and thus must weigh more?

My fat bike would float and must weigh less than a duck.

To my knowledge, ducks also float so they must weigh the same as a fat bike.

Maybe if you put plastic pedals on duck it would be a lot lighter than your fat bike?

[Edit]Also boutique carbon its heavy. Fact.

Though fact carbon isn't boutique so maybe it's not heavy?

That french bloke who used to eat light bulbs and metal, i'd have him eat your bike, then weigh his droppings.

Hmmm not sure I'd like to separate the bike from the other stuff. Also an orange tart big its bound to give him the runs
