I also found a random garage down a back alley that opens up, you can drive in and they just drive past.

You buy a game where you can't progress without murdering (a lot of) people. Watching brutal murders is bad, but watching murders generally is OK provided they're done tastefully and with a degree of sensitivity?

Not quite. It's ok as long as you don't get involved with the characters and they don't provoke any empathy. And the nature of the crime is not dwelled on. I never shed a tear over any of the aliens I killed in Space Invaders for example.

It's the same in films. Pulp Fiction - ok. The kid who gets his head blown off, in the movie is just a 2D character with no background, so I just don't care that he was someone's son etc. Reservoir Dogs - not ok for me. The scene where they torture the policeman upset me and I had to stop watching it. Because it was dwelled on enough for me to start empathising. I'm sure there are movies where you were moved to feel for the characters - it's just the line is drawn differently for most of us.

Personally I find it odd that someone would buy GTAV and then be upset at the level of violence in it.

Where did I say I was upset?

I enjoy the games because of the gameplay. I watched Johnny's murder and I did the torture mission, and I still enjoy the game. Partly because MOST of Trevor's character so far is acceptable, and those things just seemed a little like anomalies. As I said, I don't think that his character is fully self consistent.

Do you just ignore their dialogue on the street Molgrips?

They are hardly well developed characters evoking empathy, are they?

Look I'm happy to talk about the emotional response to the game, it's an interesting topic, but let's not start a row about it please?

Either stop playing or stop being such a hypocrite then, you're pretty much single handedly ruining this thread.

You seem to have no idea how complex the programming and attention to detail in each seemingly random AI in the game actually is in comparison to characters you don't even interact with other than in set pieces and cut scenes.

Whoah.. that's a bit strong. All I did was say I found him a bit distasteful. You lot didn't have to argue with me about it. I don't think one modest opinion ruined the thread. You all said how you liked him, I said I didn't. That was it.

NPC AI isn't the same as scripted characterisation.

Anyway, I find this interesting, but you lot apparently don't so I'll leave it there.

No I agree, it is interesting, I certainly wasn't trying to be confrontational (although I admit my original hyperbole could be interpreted that way) 🙂

Is there much of a distinction between the relationship formed with characters in a game compared to a movie? I'd have thought the character development in GTA was less believable/engaging compared to a good movie (although this feels a bit illogical at first since you "control" the characters).

I can walk away from a movie and think it was a bit brutal and perhaps distasteful, but if you go to see Saw IV, then you'd be foolish to think it was going to be anything different. You wouldn't think of suggesting Saw IV is "too violent", because that's just what it is. if you wanted less violent, you'd buy another movie.

There's definitely an element of Rockstar "upping" their game in GTAV in terms of the level of detail in the cutscenes. the GTA market is so huge now that it will no doubt contain a broader section of gamers, from the people who reluctantly buy the game because they love the game play but are not so keen on the violence, to the total nutjobs who spend 5 hours at a time driving around and shooting strangers, laughing manically and masturbating.

I dunno. I really felt a bond with the Mexican pedestrian who periodically would say "**** me in the aaaaaass!".

Seemed like a nice fella.

My Girl for me. I'm absolutely fine with Reservoir Dogs tho.

I'm happy enough to donkey punch anyone who walks past as any character
I didn't know you could do that in this game, or do you mean something else?

Haha, I knew it had a different meaning, was thinking that while typing - should have checked before I posted, my mate uses the term just to mean punching someone hard, guess he definitely hasn't been on urban dictionary!

But, I'm sure Trevor would love donkey punching anyway.........

Hope to see you all online this weekend!

I returned to single player last night to sweep up some of the remaining side-missions, and played a couple of hours with no violence at all. There was celebrity-pestering, drug delivery, parachuting and mountain bike racing, but not a single shot was fired. It just didn't feel right somehow.

Has anybody managed to complete it to 100%? I'm looking forward to this then restarting it choosing different mission options.

No worries Marko wondered where you'd gone. I'm nights for 2 nights then off and on my own for 2 days. Bring on takeaways, beer and GTA V.

You don't have to. The replay mission option allows you to take the different options on each of the heists and all of the final missions are available too.

No package here. I've now hit level 13 5 times and logged back in to find it back at level 12. Getting tiresome 😛

Maybe I'm on at the wrong time but I'm getting few missions where people are joining

anonymous, I want to do it all again. The whole journey was good fun.

atlaz, I have had that a few times too when nobody wants to join the missions. Not a biggie, most of the missions I enjoy online are doable solo, its just harder.

I too don't have the money yet.

well my problem is because I'm not levelling up, I only recently got the SMG but it's quite hard to do stuff like the pier mission when your gun is quite short range. Makes for quite careful mission choice

Got your invite last night i_ache but was in the middle of hunting some guys down who tried to take us out. A sticky bomb sorted them and their car out but cost me about £1k in compensation.

Hate the way it does that it's Pvp so you should be allowed to blow players cars up.

Went on yesterday afternoon to build some cash up for my sniper rifle, it's now scoped and silenced. It's great for picking off people escaping on motorbikes.

No worries Drac. I had somebody take issue with me last night for no reason whatsoever. I was on my way to Lesters so just ignored him shooting for a while, this got tedious so I turned around and ran him off his motorbike. Nobber.

I'm really underwhelmed by online, loads of waiting around, missions with very few people, did a deathmatch the other day with one other bloke, who just jumped in a car and drove off!

Driving around mowing folk down is quite funny, but there just don't seem to be enough people for anything to really happen for me.

How does it save the character online, do you have to quit back to the normal game? Phone doesnt have a quicksave feature and I lost my level, think I just turned the console off though.

Yeah I always hold the down d-pad button and go back into offline before quitting. *touchwood* haven't lost anything doing it that way.

If you're playing on your own - firstly find a crew! - and are you selecting missions through 'quick job' or waiting for people to join the missions you get sent to your phone?

Join games with other crew members, think I seen you the other night and the cruise with them in free mode. There's superb missions in multiplayer but the problem is when you get an invite you can't tell it's a crew member.

Yes switch back to offline mode as it forces a save to the servers, it updates regularly but occasionally they bug out so don't just quit the game. I've lost no rank since the problems on launch of MP.

Yes i thought this at first but now I have levelled up a bit I have a lot more missions to go for.

I prefer LTS missions or racing (although I am pants at the later) - but my favourite ones are survival - good points free guns and easy chance to level up. If you join PHUK I can invite you to a survival game and all you have to do is survive until the 3rd round (when guns get interesting!). Once you have played one game you can enter free mode with all the guns you collected during the mission :). Once you get the mini gun hunting prey (idiots online) is much fun as there isnt much they can do!

If you see me online and host a mission I can join in and use a sniper rifle if that helps. If I have already done a survivor mission maybe I can meet up and 'drop' a weapon by your feet??????

Ps I now have an apartment - a single lady in a one bedroom apartment in a nice area of town with a 6 car garage! What is a girl to do?

I messed up more.. Only realised after that last round that I should have come over to that portacabin with you and made a stand. I really suck at online FPS for some reason, so I need more practice. I seem to be good at the races though 🙂

Oh and your bum does look big in those hotpants, I'm afraid.

Molgrips - no worries. Yes the portacabins are the place to be on the 'boneyard' and also the one by the scrap yard (name escapes me) especially if there are two of you. Its just he helicopters which are a pain! Good luck for the future games and hope to see you online!
