The wife is keen to get a barbie for next spring / summer and was impressed by one of the green egg ones we seen at Ludlow. Semmed helluva expensive to me, but the barbied duck was superb.
Anyone reccomend something similar, but cheaper?

No, and no idea how much it costs.
But I do have a Cobb. About £100 (just under IIRC). portable enough to shove in the car for awaydays, cool base, the moat holds liquid to keep the food moist, or you ca flavour it, eg with lemon juice = the best chicken. can do pizza, bread and hot smokes really well. i'm still trying to find a way to cold smoke
Also i'd advise the use of the seperate roasting rack
Only uses 6 or 7 briquettes, but cobb do cobblestones (compressed coconut leftovers designed to fit in the firebox) which are great fun to set fire to, and ready to cook in 2 or 3 minutes (cost about £8 for 10)
no stand though
