I was thinking that the first image on the first link looks like one on MW (the TV studio one I think)

Ooooo, great thread, guys. Hashima Island looks like scenes from Akira, and the Russian resort is amazing. Love to visit both with a good camera and a load of big empty SD cards. Bookmarked all those sites for later study. Thanks.

There's a luxury resort on Montserrat that was half covered by pyroclastic flow from the recent (started 1995 and still technically ongoing) Soufriere Hill eruption. You can visit by guided tour only. That's eery. Everything is covered by about 4ft of compacted ash, and while you can go into the hotel complex the doors are all now half height, the swimming pool is 2 ft deep, etc.

When I lived in the bush in Australia there was an abandoned uranium mining town nearby - Mary Kathleen. It felt quite creepy because it was still maintained (it had a resident caretaker and was fenced in) so when you wandered around it was like being in one of those SF movies where everyone else in the world has disappeared.

It actually was resurrected later but the next time it was closed down everything got auctioned off - even the buildings. They got relocated to other towns.

The Multimap location shows the empty sites where the houses were.

There were also plenty abandoned mines in the area. After WW1 the demand for copper etc plummeted and the the mining equipment was left just as it was. Places like Selwyn, Kuridala, etc. The houses had all been removed to other towns like Mt Isa or Cloncurry.
