Right, I'm a complete novice, never used one before. I have a hero8, bought by work for such events as I need it for now. Have an unusual leak on plant, only happens during a sequence that occurs at night.
I want to go in, set up gopro to film for as long as possible, preferably 12 hours, what settings to use, any issues with it shutting down in battery saving mode, anything you can think of, greatly appreciated. Once I work out when the leak happens, I can look at pressure/temp/etc trends pertaining to that window, and hopefully diagnose.

You can't film continuously for 12 hours as you'll fill the memory card. You can do a timelapse thing though. Normally easiest of you have the app on your phone.
Even with a big SD card? Think it's a 256Gb
Doubt the battery will last much more than an hour or 2. Can you plug it into a USB battery pack? Though that may mean its not waterproof.
Also what resolution do you need? 4K video will use loads of space on a memory card. For 1080, a 256GB card might be enough for 12 hours.
Time lapse video sounds perfect, superb guys, thanks a lot!
Aye, I was planning on using a battery pack with it Craig.
I'd forgetten how much fun a time lapse video can be. I might dig mine out and have a play.
Set the resolution to something sensible like bog standard HD. I've not had a H8, but the H7 had a habbit of crashing if left for long periods recording in higher resolutions.
does it have motion detect?

Yeah, I'll go basic 1080, should be fine.
Anyone any idea if I'll be able to get a timestamp on a timelapse? as I'd like to know when the occurence happens?.
I don't think you get timestamp out of the box with a gopro. Should be easy enough to work out though if you know the start time and frame rate.
Alternatively, buy a cheap clock and put that in frame.

Very good sir, simplest ideas are often the best!.
Another GoPro newbie here, just finding my way round it

This struck me as very odd today - it seems really odd that there isn't a frame by frame timecode
For timelapse, it just takes photos as JPEG files with EXIF data. So you can check the time from that.
Just make sure the GoPro time is set accurately beforehand. In my experience it can drift a bit.

The clocks that run time code cost a small fortune. A snip at £850+vat!
I think the Tentacle version (which is only usable accuracy rather than frames in a week accurate) is about £280 and go-pro compatible. Otherwise you have to go back to the hero 4 for timecode and the syncback-pro which was an addon.
For your use though, just put a watch somewhere in the foreground.
