It seems to be permanently on and is really annoying when searching from the Google home page. It can be turned off manually but this has to be all the time. Is there a way to disable google instant permanently??

Nope, but agreed its pants. Only way to disable it permanently is to make a google aco**** I think

On a serious note though, set up an account and change your preferences - just use your normal email address, no gmail required.

google instant is great if you're a touch typist. Which I aren't.
